Christian conservative leader invokes Bush while saying he'd gladly murder
Religious right leader and televangelist Jimmy Swaggart invoked George Bush's name today, and Bush's support for the Federal Marriage Amendment, while telling his parishioners that he'd gladly murder any gay man who looked at him the wrong way. I am so kidding you not. (You can see the video here, start watching around minute 36:30 - courtesy of Atrios, Jesus' General and Hairy Fish Nuts).

This little son of a bitch said he would kill a gay man and then lie about it, saying the guy just died on his own, and his parishioners roared with approval. Then he praised God George Bush was a president willing to stand up to the gays by supporting the constitutional amendment.

I'm sorry, but in today's day and age if you go on TV and tell millions of Americans that it's ok, and downright godly, to murder gay people, and you said it while invoking the name of the president, then I think we have a problem that the Justice Department needs to investigate, and at the very least, the president needs to distance himself from this nutjob who is invoking the president's name in the same breath with murder.

As an aside, you might remember that Jimmy Swaggart is the guy who got caught hooking up with a New Orleans hooker. If you don't remember one of these great moments in TV history, click here to see Swaggart admitting he's a SINNER, and read more about Swaggart's fornication here.

3. This Is The Reason We Are Facing A Civil War In This Country
There is a cancer in our society and it is the fundamentalist Christian movement and their enablers, corporations and media.

The facts are there for all to see.

18. I think it is the other way around. I agree it's a cancer.
I think that the corporations are in charge, and they are using hysteria to whip up a frenzy of support for their political enablers.

It's amazing how well fear of gays works to rally the troops. There are notable times of mass hysteria in human history, and I think we're entering another one.

It is no longer an exaggeration to compare the United States to pre-Nazi Germany. There are many legitimate parallels between what is happening now and what was happening there in the 1930s.

The inevitable result is defeat for the country that engages in the hysteria, and generations of shame.

29. It's here - this is the cold war period
We've been at war; it was declared openly a long time ago, but the enemy exploits tolerance as a weakness. Liberals need to learn that the kind of hate and ignorance we are up against is dangerous, and it is to be not to be tolerated. I don't give a damn if these pigs want to hide behind the cross; I will not stand for their lies and thuggery, and should they seek to harm me or mine, I will strike them down and they will stay down.

There are eleven of them. Oral Roberts, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Foreman (in Fort Worth) Jimmy Baker.

The ruling council is in Springfield, Missouri. This is Ashcrofts Church.

13. Falwell is Baptist.
Was independent for years but took his church into the Southern Baptist Convention a few years back. Quite a few Southern Baptists objected to that on the grounds that Falwell will probably try to take over the convention, given how he usually works.

39. Asscroft is a member of Assembly of God, Swaggart was kicked out
of the Assemblies of God for his "incident" with the hooker. Pat Robertson was once a Baptist minister, but he now holds no demoninational affiliation. He is a proponent of Kingdon Now (theonomy). Jim Bakker also has no official affiliation with a denomination, although he has done some work with Rick Joyner of Morningstar ministries in North Carolina (Morning Star is big in the prophetic movement, and signs and wonders movement - no denomination). Jerry Falwell is an Independent Fundamentalist Baptist. Oral Roberts is a Word-Faith preacher and has no official denominational affiliation.

All these guys get lumped together, but in reality many of them disagree strongly on religious issues. Of course they are willing to drop the disagreements for political reasons.

11. Well, anyone who's a big enough fool...
... to send money to a TV preacher is a big enough fool to vote for George W. Bush.

I don't think Jimmy Swaggart is going to change the demographics much. These people were rabid fundies well before George Bush arrived on the scene.

But, the essential point is well-taken. A TV personality with a very odd bunch of supporters who's advocating hate crime certainly falls into the category of pandering and incitement. But, don't expect Ashcroft to investigate any time soon.

Cheers.

14. Besides being fascist asshats,
a lot of these fundies clearly have some, er, *issues* relating to homosexuality. Otherwise, why would they spend so much time and energy constantly thinking about all that hot man-on-man action that other people are doing all the time and that they themselves, being Godly men, would never, ever even consider doing? Most of us don't worry much about what other folks are doing in the sack, and if somebody is totally obsessing about the sex lives of total strangers, well, that doesn't seem exactly normal or healthy, does it?

perhaps a war.

Each side hates the other, and the sides are pretty evenly divided. The rhetoric escalates daily, and the current administration seems to encourage it.

I don't know if Kerry winning this thing can fix whats wrong with America. I think the infection needs to be cut out.

and that;s what he said. What bothers me is that the congregation cheered him. Look, I'm a Christian, and regardless of one's views on homosexuality, to flippantly threaten to kill a gay person and lie to God and say he died, is outrageous. Swaggart has learned nothing at all.

Every decent American who votes republican empowers the groups who condone and even champion this type of behavior. Those decent Americans delude themselves into believing that the Reich wing fundamentalists are powerless and harmless in an amusing and quaint sort of way when in fact the Reich wing fundamentalists are the heart and soul of the republican party and wield real power and near total control. It is the decent Americans who are powerless in the republican party. They need to be confronted with the fact that they empower hatred and bigotry with every vote they cast.
