Some conservatives say the furor over the speech by the right threatens to discredit Republicans as they battle with the White House and Congress over health care, the budget and other important policy issues. "People should chill out a little -- they don't have to criticize for everything he does," said Frank Luntz, a onetime strategist for Republican candidates. Conservative critics, he said, need to "pick your battles," or "at some point the public will stop listening."

The outcry at our school was tremendous -- but we expected it in the heavily RW area. The kids have a lot of snide little racist remarks about anyone of color. These have intensified since last November and, although we call them on it and make referrals, counsel them, etc., they continue. They learn it at home and we can't fix the parents. I had a kid use a racist term last year in a homework assignment. When I called home, the dad said "Oh yeah, I occasionally talk that way." What can we do about that?
