We all know John Kerry has overwhelming support in Europe and elsewhere as evidenced by a fairly recent poll, to wit:
Of all the polls that have been released recently, there is one that is so lopsided it makes this Presidential campaign look like a one-horse race.
Senator Kerry would win by a huge margin if the people questioned in this poll could vote in November. But of course they can't because the poll was carried out in 35 other countries around the world. The survey, reported in London's Financial Times, was carried out by the public opinion group Globescan, in conjunction with the University of Maryland. The results are stunning. In 30 of these countries, the public prefers Senator Kerry over President Bush by a two-to-one-margin.http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/13/opinion/fenton/main642860.shtmlWe also feel intuitively that a Kerry administration would be much more likely to garner the international support which is required to stabilize Iraq.
When the results of the above Globalscan poll were published, the reaction was that it's nice to know and all, but does nothing to help Kerry.
One thing other
governments can't do is openly support Kerry of course, but supposing the citizens of those 35 countries were polled again and asked "Would you support your government assisting the U.S. in the stabilization of Iraq if Kerry is elected President?" vs. "Would you support your government assisting the U.S. in the stabilization of Iraq if Bush remains President?"
That poll would swing some damn swing voters!
