Right-wingers cry socialism over 9/11 anniversary plan backed by many in GOP
Source: RawStory.com

Right-wing commentators are claiming that the White House is planning to "erase the meaning" of the 9/11 attacks and turn the anniversary into "a day of leftist celebration and statist idolatry" — despite the fact that the plan for a National Day of Service on 9/11 had broad bipartisan support.

An article by Matthew Vadum, published Monday in the American Spectator, states that the president’s plan for a National Day of Service, to be celebrated on September 11, would eliminate 9/11 as a political tool for Republicans.

"The plan is to turn a 'day of fear' that helps Republicans into a day of activism called the National Day of Service that helps the left," writes Vadum. "In other words, nihilistic liberals are planning to drain 9/11 of all meaning."

As some commentators have pointed out, Vadum’s article overlooks the fact that the idea to link the 9/11 anniversary to volunteerism was originally promoted by President George W. Bush, and the bill to make it law, passed this spring, had bipartisan support.

2. I just don't have the stomach
to check out the spectator rag website today but did Vadum actually say that the 9/11 anniversary is "a day of fear that helps Republicans"? Any thinking person knows this is the true Republicon message but they rarely if ever admit that they need to keep people afraid.

5. "Day of fear" is in quotation marks
So, he's a bit removed from the total truth, but otherwise, it's all there. Pretty jaw-dropping, huh?

11. I don't think I've ever
seen one of them admit this truth publically. Perhaps this little article needs to see some sunlight outside of the crypt that is the conservative echo-chamber?

Then, I'm going to spy on my neighbors while they have sex and kill their dog in the name of security.

I mean, the idea of giving someone something without the expectation of getting something in return? HORRORS!

(It's nice if someone does give you something in return ... but it shouldn't be EXPECTED ...)

You thought you could control it, just have them come out and act like angry mainstreamers in order to distort the appearance of public opinion. Instead, they've rampaged across everything we and you hold sacred, and are damaging your reputation even more than it had already been.

17. "a 'day of fear' that helps Republicans" -- holy crap!?!
The guy had the cojones to actually say, out loud, that using 9/11 as a 'day of fear' was advantageous to the Republicans, and that they needed to retain that edge.

"The only thing we have to fear, is fear resolved?"

So, is this Obama's plan or was is signed into law. I'm confused now.

27. I don't know but alot of folks in my neck of the woods are pretty damn pissed off about it.,.
Edited on Tue Aug-25-09 07:18 PM by flyarm
people keep coming up asking me what i think about it..I try to deflect..but to be damn honest..i think it is a dumb assed move..and i think in the NJ & Ny area there could be a big backlash! Maybe it is easy for others in other parts of the country , but people here want quiet reflection..ans respect for the families and the victims.

As I have said numerous times here..two of my neighbors lost their children...I saw one on the street last week and the mom is pissed as hell! And she is very verbal about it.
My sisters best friend who lost her husband is really on a rampage of anger!

Why can't we just leave that day alone?

My home town lost the most victims..and I can tell you there is real anger here about it.

and please don't anyone suggest they get over it..because that will never happen!

38. No one needs to get over anything.
There's no reason they can't observe the day the way they want and others can do what they need to do.

Who needs to be telling others how to grieve or handle their grief?

On 9/11 everyone was asking what can I do. This just enables that feeling you had that day. It sure beats watching the playback of cnn's or msnbc's coverage of that day followed by 3000 bell tolls.

29. Do you prefer the day of fear and re-enactment.
While the families are important, this wouldn't be for the families - it would be for the rest of us who also had a trauma that day. Granted it is not the same as the families, but there is nothing we can do to bring back the loved ones - although I will one day if I can create a time machine. The families probably should have a special function for just them on that day.

I personally won't sit through that re-enactment again.

35. The idiots who use 9/11 to promote fear disgust me. I knew someone who almost died
in the Pentagon that day. She was in a coma for months. They could care less about the people who died or were hurt that day. To them these people are to be used. It has not worked in the last few years anyway as more people realized that we could have prevented 9/11 if Bush and Condi and the gang were actually paying attention in August 2001.

42. So this asshole Vadum...
...talks about 9/11 strictly in terms of whether it is a 'day of fear' that 'helps Republicans' vs. a 'day of service' that 'helps the left' -- and then turns around and says it is the left who are planning to 'drain 9/11 of all meaning'.

All in the space of two sentences. Do these people not see what gibbering lunatics they are? (never mind, I know the answer)

"The plan is to turn a 'day of fear' that helps Republicans into a day of activism called the National Day of Service that helps the left," writes Vadum. "In other words, nihilistic liberals are planning to drain 9/11 of all meaning."
