14. Yes, the rhetoric is changing.
Keep up the pressure, the letters, the emails, the phone calls and the faxes. Also, it doesn't hurt that the progressive Dems have finally grown a spine and have said they won't sign a House bill without a strong public option. I still don't know what we are going to do about the Senate and the Finance Committee, who have the power to fuck things up.

but I guess the up lash from all of us put him back on track yesterday and today. They actually played the sound bites of what was said, so there was no doubt that he and his administration were ready to leave it behind until they got the message.

23. No he did not waffle.. seriously he did not
He said that the PO was a sliver, a portion of the bill.. the bill will be much bigger than PO, it will be insurance reform, including stopping ins, companies from using preexisting conditions with their corporate death panels.

There really were death panels Cleita, the corporate kind. Obama has been pushing insurance reform since his own Mother had to fight through it when she had ovarian cancer.

It is just the way Obama addresses issues. He always does it that way, and people have been pulling their hair out by its roots about the way Obama addresses issues from day one. His halting speech when he thinks through something before commenting on it, to the educational tone.

But he was always for PO. always.

The fact that the press, falls apart at the seams with him over this, is nothing new.. and they will do it again at the next issue.

26. I'm sorry he was going to sign whatever came across his desk because
he felt that was what was wanted. I think he's rethinking that. I'm hoping he realizes now that elected officials aren't always working for their constituents best interests but only throwing a few bones at them to get votes and throwing them under the bus when they are no longer needed. Anyway, things are looking better.

42. You think he's rethinking. Obama has stood his ground for ages.
However, I've seen you underestimating him quite a bit. However, Obama is not a man who doesn't stand by his word. And if his word slightly changes he explains it to the American people. He even plans on still releasing the picturs he held back.

As for your statement on elected officials. Obama clearly understands that very well and hence the reason he's always stood by the Public Option and NOT HR 676 (Single-Payer System) as a candidate or as Preisdent.

Things have always looked better. Progressives who live on the words of others and not the Presidents---well that's something else. So when they go butt as crazy over op-eds and what not that's their own perogative. But nothing ever said by the President (and him alone) during this whole thing started the drama. He's definitely not about it, but most everyone seems to thrive on drama.

44. You do know that Medicare for all and HR676 are the same thing?
Also, any public option that is workable would have to be close to that. You do know that? What he has not been clear about is what shape the public option will take that is acceptable to him.

48. ~sigh~ I'm fully aware what HR 676 is.
The economic framework for the PO is very different. This is common knowledge, secondly it's on a far smaller scale considering private insurance companies would be around.

If you claim to say that the public option would be close to an expansion of medicare....then why does it seem as though the President hasn't been clear on the PO? It would be easy enough to assume it would match the same sort of benefits. He has publicly stated that the PO should provide basic health care:

•Doctor and hospital care, including preventive care
•Emergency services
•Prescription drugs

Only thing missing is really dental and that's always overlooked.

67. Not so. They can put Medicare out there as an option for people to choose.
I mention HR 676 because it fixes the problems Medicare has today like the holes shot into it by various Republican Congresses and administrations, but HR 676 is just Medicare for All. It could be refashioned to be part of the insurance exchange they keep talking about.

73. HR 676 does not allow the exitence of private insurance
Meaning that there will be no "option" for those who think that they want to keep their current insurance.

Prohibits an institution from participating unless it is a public or nonprofit institution. Allows nonprofit health maintenance organizations (HMOs) that deliver care in their own facilities to participate. Private insurance would be replaced via the Medicare expansion.
Prohibits a private health insurer from selling health insurance coverage that duplicates the benefits provided under this Act. Allows such insurers to sell benefits that are not medically necessary, such as cosmetic surgery benefits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_National_Health_Care_Act

HR676 is medicare for all which is good, but its not optional, which makes it a political nightmare.

74. HR 676 hasn't even been debated yet. So the final version can contain
those changes. Of course, it could be a separate bill modeled on HR 676 or Medicare for all but with language that makes it an option competing with other kinds of health care coverage. It's just a bill a lot of us like and we want the public options to be close to it.

37. I'm not celebrating until I see what the public "option" is
if it's like the one in HR3200, it will be far too corporate friendly and not cover anyone before 2013. That will give the for profits plenty of time to continue jacking up their rates until the hammer comes down and it will do nothing to help the uninsured. There are people who need health care now, not health insurance four years from now.

If he finally woke up and realized "bipartisanship" won't work maybe he'll also figure out that he needs to do more than throw a bone in the general direction of those who are looking for real reform. A public option that doesn't at least begin to set the stage for single payer but only protects the status quo is useless.

August 18, 2009

"For the second time in two days, Mr. Obama did not mention health care on Tuesday, a marked departure from the aggressive public relations campaign he mounted in July and early August. The White House is striving to stay out of the fray, aides said, until the president can get away on vacation this weekend."

in President Obama.

The ones that talk about not voting for him in the next election because " he said" he was not going for the Public Option.

Some of those "Progressives" just started coming around DU again in big numbers. I wonder why?

I was so please to see a thread locked that had a great explanation by the moderator. It talked about threads that were simple "flame bait" and did not lead to worthy discussion.

I love DU and things had been going great for about 3 weeks and now we have the "Threat Patrol" again. The ones that Threaten us that they will leave the Democratic Party.

I say, leave now. Why wait? Maybe the next President will be a Republican that will certainly have your "best interest at heart."

I'm a Democrat and will be supportive of the Party by lending my time, dimes and talent to see that we can work together to make America a better place. :patriot:
