It's too early to know for sure but I strongly suspect that, unless they do really well in 2010 (doubtful) and/or Obama severely crashes and burns, the GOP will probably just write off 2012.

... the Republicans will make minor gains in the House & Senate in 2010, but Obama will be strong enough by 2012 that they'll end up nominating a sacrifical lamb like Palin to lose to Obama in a landslide. They'll probably win in 2016- Jon Huntsman, anyone? - but that's just the way it usually goes in Presidential elections; the White House tends to switch every eight years.

Minor gains by the Republicans in 2010 but NO 1994-style turnover IMHO although health care reform may change the dynamics, particularly if it is popular and it doesn't get any Republican votes (hence, NO credit for them).

Given the natural advantages of incumbency and absent any major catastrophes I don't see Obama losing in 2012 regardless of who the Republicans nominate because, as it stands, the crazies seem to be firmly in control of the party and it will probably take the remaining "moderates" (are there actually any left?) too long to try to tamp down on them and take back control of the party- let alone figure out who to nominate that will be simultaneously moderate(-looking) enough to attract independents but satisfactory for the fundies and wingnuts. John McCain might have been that person back in 2008 but the GOP had to nominate Sarah Palin for VP before the fundies were fully on board with his candidacy and even then it was really more about Sarah Palin with them. He is almost certainly not going to do a re-match with Obama and he probably wouldn't be able to be nominated again anyway.

2016 is wide open to speculation but it really depends on what is going on with the Republicans at that time. If they "moderate" and manage to move back towards the center and/or find a cause that resonates with a lot of people :rofl:, there's a chance that they could win back some of the independents. If the crazies continue ruling the roost, however, the GOP will probably be effectively dead as a national party.
