Obama Demands: The Bill I Sign Must Include Public Option (July 17)
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 05:03 PM by ProSense
(A)ny plan I sign must include an insurance exchange: a one-stop shopping marketplace where you can compare the benefits, cost and track records of a variety of plans - including a public option to increase competition and keep insurance companies honest - and choose what's best for your family.

1. I've already been told today that that quote doesn't count because it's too old
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 05:14 PM by tridim
Apparently the statute of limitations on Obama statements is 30 days.

4. he can say co-ops satisfy that demand
imo, if we get the public option, it's going to be because progressives force him to get behind it.

7. The "Public Option" in HR 3200 isn't "Public".
Very few would be eligible for the "Public Option" as specified in HR 3200.

15. Read the Bill.
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 06:27 PM by bvar22
The MAJORITY of Americans receiving Health Insurance from their employers (150 Million) will be ineligible for the "Public Option". They call that a "Firewall".

The "Public Option" will be so restricted that the CBO projects LESS than 10 Million will be enrolled in the "Public Option" by 2019.

Nonsense back at ya!

17. Public = government
When few people qualify for a government program, it's still a public program.

12. Really depends how they are structured
"Public Option" language is so fucking ambiguous it could be any damn thing. They did that for a reason, ya know.

18. The idea seems to be for non-profits to run the co-ops.
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 09:26 PM by Eric J in MN
The problem is that there is no limit on how much executives at a non-profit can get paid.

In the federal government, by contrast, no one's salary can exceed the president.

So a co-op means premiums going to huge salaries, as with a private insurance company.

8. You're several weeks behind.
Obama has stopped talking about "Health Care Reform" for a while now.
It has morphed into "Health Insurance Reform".

Obama didn't even mention the "Public Option" in his editorial in the New York Times today,
but he DID talk about cutting $500Billion from Medicare.

Scary stuff. :scared:

13. And, this is what he said - VERBATIM on Saturday....
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 06:15 PM by debbierlus
From the AP

"All I'm saying is, though, that the public option, whether we have it or we don't have it, is not the entirety of health care reform," Obama said at a town hall meeting in Grand Junction, Colo. "This is just one sliver of it, one aspect of it."

It is completely understandable that people would be taking the most recent quote seriously, as it shows a shift from the word 'MUST'

to

'Whether we have it or we DON'T, is not the entirety of health care reform'....'One SLIVER' (and the public option is no sliver, it is the difference between a competition and lower prices (thus more care) versus a private insurance mandate (which he also campaigned AGAINST)

This is SHARPLY different language then a clear demand for a public option. And, it is troublesome, to say the very least.
