Daschel regarding U.S. health care system "Islands of excellence in a sea of mediocrity"
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 10:39 AM by eleny
He's never been my favorite person. But this was a terrific, quotable assertion he made to Sen. Coburn on Meet The Press while they argued about the state of America's system. He also cited the World Health Organization's judging America as 37th in the world.

1. I think he said there were "islands of excellence in a sea of mediocrity."

Otherwise it sounds like America is an island of excellence and the rest of the world is mediocre, whereas we know he was saying there are islands (or pockets) of excellent medical care in the U.S. but most are mediocre.

I agree it's a good sound-bite.

4. Important distinction
You're right. He said that within the US health system there were islands of excellence in a sea of mediocrity.

2. The US system has "islands of excellence in a sea of mediocrity"

Your subject line makes it sound as if he is sayin that the system is an island of excellence.
You probably need to update that

6. And it's those "islands" that draw people from other countries here for treatment. Not the ...
... rest of the mediocre system. Nicely knocks out that GOP "envy of the world" meme.
