All week, we've been hearing these people express surprise or suspicion that President Obama's town hall meetings have not descended into the vicious food fights we've seen at some other venues, with people shouting down, arguing with and showing disdain for the President.
Instead, they've witnessed Americans who are excited, proud and honored to see him up close and personal - even when they disagree with him - and are treating the President with the respect that he and his office deserve and command.
Why does this seem strange to them?
Is it because they've started to believe their own irrational hype and have convinced themselves that the sliver of lunatics they've obsessively covered in recent weeks actually represent "real" Americans - to the point that they can't understand it when the vast majority of people would never even consider behaving that way, even toward a President for whom they didn't vote and with whom they don't agree?
Or are they having a difficult time accepting that this African-American President has the ability and desire to appeal to the better angels and the best instincts of the people he serves - ALL people, regardless of their race - and those people sense that and respond to him in kind. And these so-called experts just can't seem to wrap their minds around the concept of a political leader who does not seek advantage by whipping people into a blathering frenzy but is instead elevating the debate and his people to a higher level, gently, respectfully and with full regard for our intelligence and decency?
Just wondering.
