3. It's impressive what they're doing. AARP is a big player. They're a big,
big animal on the broad prairie and they are leaning hard toward reform.

They do educate their membership better than many other groups, and health care is imperative to their membership, needless to say.

They dropped the ball earlier regarding an initiative of Senator Kennedy's and got their hindends chewed out for it but good. Their membership fell dramatically.

They're on the rebound now, and not likely to repeat the errors of the past.

9. not really. it was quite clear.
they support health care reform but want to make sure everyone--including the President--know they won't be prematurely tied to supporting something that isn't even defined yet.

11. The radio ad is particularly effective with the buzzer calls out lies about healthcare reform.
The talking heads need the AARP's buzzer--since they never seem to call out the lies from the right wing media message machine. Rachel Maddow is particularly effective at calling out the lies and finding out whose bankrolling them.

12. AARP profits by licensing their name to Insurance products
and their opinion of insurance reform will be understood in that context by the membership. That is both 'good' and 'bad' but it is at last just what it is, so putting too much emphasis on AARP is really not all that wise for any politician. Seniors who support health care reform are very aware of what AARP is, and they are not under the impression that AARP dictates talking points to them, nor do they think AARP is always correct or that AARP shares their interests. They think of AARP as a business that they buy from, or that they do not buy from due to high prices.
I think proponents of reform would do well to ramp back the emphasis on AARP. The older people who are opposed to reform are not going to be listening to AARP. Those that want Medicare for all are also not in agreement with AARP. There are precious few people who cut and paste their opinions from AARP, particularly after they backed the Part D 'reform' of Bush.
To attempt to make this point without politics, when I hear seniors told what AARP thinks as if that should also be what they think, it reminds me of when straight folks tell me what Elton John thinks, and gaze in amazement that I do not share his opinion, as we are both gay.

17. I don't trust AARP one FUCKING bit. They shill for the insurance agencies.
Those ads are to fool and confuse people so they don't catch on to what they are all about. :puke:
