This was someone's grandmother. Question, if the elderly woman was of another race, would she be lying on the ground with a busted head?

The black story, this is a 88 yr old woman with Alzheimer's and was left in the car by her daughter. Yeah she had a knife, but no one looked threatened.

That lady was feeble and walking with a cane. She couldn't hurt someone if she tried.
There were two officers, one could approach her from the front and the other from the back.

I think the police were too rough with her though, they should have used less force on someone so old and feeble.

Trying to get her to drop her knife: done.

After that the options are:

Shooting her: nope (of course).
Tazing her: nope (of course, could kill her).
Hitting her with a stick: nope (same as above).
Letting her walk past you: nope, older folks can do awkward things, including stabbing you for no reason (I worked as a nurse assistant, I know).
Doing a karate trick to twist her arm and make her drop the knife: not easy to do and could break her arm.

I see the option used by the cop as reasonable, because she disarmed the lady without hurting her too much. She probably did not use that much force either, you don't need that much to down an 80lbs old lady.

Being a cop ain't easy, really. I admire them more than I despise them, as far right wing as they are sometimes.

If this was a younger more vigorous person, I'd understand why they threw the person to the ground. However, this seemed like a frail old lady. If she lunged, she'd fall over. The measures taken should be commensurate with the danger presented.

Cops know this works a minority of cases. They are always scared to get stabbed, hit or shot.

There was no imminent danger. This lady was feeble and using a cane. She wasn't going to run or take quick actions.

being trained in her profession, I would have thought that SHE would have come up with a better way to get the knife. Lord knows she had enough time and should have realize that the woman had mental as well as physical issues.

Please view the video again. You will see the blood on the ground around her head. The viewers were commenting on the blood and her head being busted.
Also the video showed that she was wobbling on her cane with the knife, so the woman was not the most mobile person. You would have also noticed that SHE DID NOT LUNG at ANYONE with the knife. The poor woman was more of a threat to herself then to anyone else in that parking lot.

I'm outraged.

Officers used to learn how to defuse situations. The ability to talk is important, particularly in domestic situations. Now it seems that force is the only thing cops are taught. What a shame.

I like to show the mainstream progressives that there is a another valid progressive POV out there. There are some of us that posts that POV on DU, but there are many more out in the Afrospere.

I had dinner last night with a sweet and kind and loving "cop"....I am working on a charity fund for fallen "COPS" children and families...see they die in the line of duty as well by "citizens who lose their damn minds!"

For many of the people stoking the race issue, they are only doing it to get distraction and maybe some intimidation. I doubt most of them care about race, they care about power and money mostly.

But some people use anything they can to try and create distractions, some may be racist, and I am not apologizing for them, I agree it is a form of racism to stoke racism, since even if the person is not racist, he by stoking it would not have a problem with others feeling that way.

Some Republican strategist sit around tables talking about using abortion issue, when they don't care about abortions, or immigration issue when they like the cheap labor for business and have not enforced immigration laws. They talk about gay marriage, not because it is something they disagree with, some are even gay, only because it gets people in their base riled up.

I agree that exposing people helps them see their own faults, and it helps everyone think on their own faults also.

27. My mother could hear the sirens from the ambulance as it pulled into

the emergency room next to the nursing home. She thought she was in prison and was forever finding weapons to break out. Pencils, etc. The police are not very well trained when it comes to dealing with persons who are ill - they regularly have problems with hearing impaired people, etc. They need to educate themselves.
