4. Now if we could just get the damn Appalachian Democrats to actually vote that way
I don't really care if one calls himself a Democrat or not. What I care about, and what matters is what they do in that voting booth.

10. I am a damn Appalachian Democrat
and I ALWAYS vote Democratic. I also do my best to do the progressive talking points around here. Not easy to do though. I at least try.

31. Maybe Atlanta leans blue, but this state is solid GOP
That map is wrong. Once you get outside of Atlanta about 50 miles in either direction, this state becomes a conservative mecca.

DEMS have made some big gains, don't get me wrong, but as a whole this state is about as red as they come. Only Atlanta marches to the tune of a different drummer.

13. If Republicans continue to act like fools, as Sarah Palin, Michell Bachmann
Governor what's his name in that Carolina state, Texas and Mississippi Governors for refusing stimulus money until the last minute,...

and all that OTHER foolish things Republican Congress critters do each and every day....

I think we can pretty well say the Republican Party will be DEAD ON ARRIVAL in 2012.

21. That may be what the poll says but.....
I just do not believe that Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio,Indiana, Missouri, and Arkansas are "solid Democratic". I would like to but I just don't. At best they all "lean Democratic" except for Kentucky, which at best is "competitive". I also do not believe that Oklahoma "leans Democratic." If I am wrong there has indeed been a sea change not seen since the FDR coalition in the 30's.

23. A lot of voters in those states identify as Dems,
still vote Democratic at the state and local level, but vote Republican at the presidential level. In other words, they're Dixiecrats.

Hell the Republicans would have to worry about Idaho with the nut jobs they have running.

22. I did a little number crunching,
and found that, if Obama won the same percentages of Dems, Reps, and Inds today as he did in 2009, he'd win 56-43.

Hell, he'd even win Kansas.

26. According to Gallup's explanation:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/122003/Political-Party-Affiliation-States-Blue-Red-Far.aspx

<snip>
It is important to note that these categories only apply to a state population's party leanings and are not necessarily indicative of a party's electoral strength in that state. Election outcomes are decided on party support (which, as shown here, typically shows a Democratic advantage) but also turnout among party supporters (which typically works in the Republicans' favor).

<snip>

So, it's purely based on state population voter registration, not most recent voter turnout.

Thus, a state that is 50% Democratic, 49% Republican, 1% Other, would be considered Democratic-leaning, even if the actual voter turnout in 2008 was 54% Republican, 45% Democratic, 1% Other, of those that voted.

28. The republican base is getting very old.
McCain's strongest demographic was in people over 65 years old, and that base is going to shrink with each passing year. Add to this that the kids who are just becoming voting age seem to be the most liberal generation in decades and seem to be politically active.

Our country suffered a 30-year swing to the right, but now it's over. At least I'll get to enjoy my retirement.
