YOU DID IT!
Now Get To Work and DO IT AGAIN

Dear XXXXX,

Let me be among the first to congratulate YOU. YOU responded and pushed the Weiner amendment in the House Energy & Commerce committee with over 50 thousand faxes, phone calls and messages in the past week. And YOU have done the job! Rep.Weiner's amendment to replace the House bill with the single payer HR 676 will be going for a floor debate and a VOTE in the House in September.

Your pressure on the House did it. Chairman Waxman announced that Speaker Pelosi promised a floor vote and a debate on single payer in the House.

Rep. Weiner nailed it down in this video clip. The url is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0fA2DfwFn4
Waxman to Weiner: Pelosi Will Allow Single-Payer Full House Vote!

How did this happen? YOU DID IT. You sent over 50,000 faxes to Congress since I asked you to support the Weiner amendment a week ago. Today, know that you have succeeded.

**Tomorrow, we start the next battle: get single payer passed on the floor vote in September.*****

**Remember: the more people that see this newsletter, the more people will be there to help when help is needed.

Between now and the September we have lots of work to do. We will all need to pitch in with our phone calls, our emails, our faxes and with our money.

Donations will be needed for this battle more than for any other.
You know the insurance company execs are probably spinning in their freshly-dug graves right now. They are not going to die until we have driven a stake through their hearts.

****We will need TV ads and we can do them, but it costs 500 dollars a day minimum for effective ads. That is 3500 dollars a week and that is about 30 thousand dollars between now and the end of September.

Obama raised $1 million for his health care ads in one week. Dean raised $1 million for his campaign in one week. Surely we, the most committed of all health care advocates, can raise thirty thousand.

There are more than 6 thousand people that see this newsletter. You can donate five dollars for yourself, and five dollars for each of the two neighbors on either side of you who don't donate. You can donate five dollars this week and five dollars next week and five dollars the week after until we have won this fight. But you can donate. When you do, the money will go to single payer and only single payer. Donate today.

6. Who knows about HR 3200?
Dear Friends,

In mid-May, in an effort to reach consensus, President Obama secured a deal with the health insurance companies to trim 1.5% of their costs each year for ten years saving a total of $2 trillion dollars, which would be reprogrammed into healthcare. Just two days after the announcement at the White House the insurance companies reneged on the deal which was designed to protect and increase their revenue at least 35%

The insurance companies reneged on the deal because they refuse any restraint on increasing premiums, copays and deductibles - core to their profits. No wonder a recent USA Today poll found that only four percent of Americans trust insurance companies. This is within the margin of error, which means it is possible that NO ONE TRUSTS insurance companies.

Then why does Congress trust the insurance companies? Yesterday HR 3200 "America's Affordable Health Choices Act," a 1000 page bill was delivered to members. The title of the bill raises a question: "Affordable" for whom?.

I was actually looking for a list of benefits that come with single payer when I stumbled upon this HR 3200.

13. ... but Obama doesn't want single payer!
Demanding nothing less than single payer might hurt his feewins. If that happened he might decide not to give us any more Hope and Change.

15. Oh God, I am crossing my fingers...
This is just too much...I saw some clip on Youtube at McCain's rally, I think, and this old lady was saying stuff like "I want to keep health care like it normally is." W.T.F.???!!!!! Maybe the fact that she's on Medicare has insulated her to younger people's realities.

20. Does this mean that we can call Medicare single-payer and extend it to all Americans?
Edited on Sun Aug-30-09 12:32 PM by bertman
If the President and so many Democrats are opposed to single-payer on the grounds that it is "legislatively unachievable", wouldn't the extension of Medicare to all accomplish the same thing without having to call it socialized medicine or single-payer or universal healthcare--which seems to be the boogeyman that the right wing is so afraid of.

Since Medicare is perceived by even the right-wing elderly as a viable and essential government program, it seems that a "labeling morph" from single-payer to Medicare-for-all-who-want-it would be an easier sell.

21. This is very important

We should push it, if for no other reason, to frame the discussion that Public Option is the compromise and to build enthusiasm for the next step after public option.

22. Our political parties
Edited on Sun Aug-30-09 12:41 PM by LatteLibertine
are being paid a lot of money to make sure this doesn't happen. I am doubtful even a true public option will pass. If something does occur that is labeled "public option" I doubt it will be what was originally envisioned or intended.
