Bayh's Wife in Deep With Health Industry
http://www.newser.com/story/65358/bayhs-wife-in-deep-with-health-industry.html

As both sides of the health care debate court Sen. Evan Bayh's elusive vote, his wife's earnings from the industry are raising more than a few eyebrows. The Indianapolis Star takes a look at Susan Bayh, who pulled down some $2.1 million between 2006 and 2008 for serving on the boards of health care companies that have a decided stake in the outcome of reform.

Susan Bayh went from midlevel lawyer at Eli Lilly while Evan Bayh was Indiana governor to serving on the boards of eight companies, beginning the month before he was elected to the Senate. "Mrs. Bayh is what is called 'overboarded,' " says one industry watcher. The senator, one of the most conservative members of the Democratic caucus, says his family's income from health care companies hasn't affected his views and he has no plans to withdraw his vote. "Her activities have had zero influence on me," he says.

What makes her appointments suspicious and worrisome is the fact that most of these board positions came after Evan Bayh was elected to the Senate.
- Craig Holman, government affairs lobbyist for advocacy group Public Citizen

10. This is disgusting
So Bayh will make sure insurance rates increase and fewer people can even access healthcare to feather his own nest.

17. Bayh is up for re-election in 2010.
His Primary would be a good place for Progressives to organize nationwide and focus our anger with "Democrats" who obstruct Obama's reform agenda.

What better way to send a "message" to the Blue Dogs?

I WILL be contributing to his Primary opponent.

18. From Today's Indy Biz Journal - Susan Bayh's Tangled Web
Corporate boards need more women, but not people such as Susan Bayh, wife of Sen. Evan Bayh.

It’s not that she isn’t up to the task. The former attorney at Eli Lilly and Co. and visiting professor at Butler University is by all accounts capable. So we’re not surprised she regularly receives invitations to serve on boards.

But we are surprised she accepts. As her husband’s political career has blossomed, questions about conflicts of interest have mushroomed.

These days, Susan Bayh, 49, serves on five boards, including WellPoint Inc. and Emmis Communications Corp. locally.

You can imagine that WellPoint brass is delighted to have Bayh aboard. After all, she has the ear of a senator who is emerging as an important player as Congress considers sweeping health care reforms.

It’s a good gig for Susan Bayh. Last year, she earned $327,000 in fees, stock and stock options from WellPoint, according to IBJ research. But the hefty compensation only heightens our unease with the arrangement.

A key question: Will Sen. Bayh be less likely to play tough with health insurers because of his wife’s position? http://cms.ibj.com/ASPXPages/6iframes/FrontEndArticlesDetailPage.aspx?ArticleID=42905&NoFrame=1

23. He should recuse himself on health care related issues!
Susan Bayh, a lawyer, drew more than $837,0000 from her work on seven corporate boards last year, as Bloomberg News notes.

She is a director at Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc., "which is part of a medical research partnership awarded a $24.7 million federal grant in May after Evan Bayh and his Indiana colleagues in Congress recommended the group to the National Institutes of Health,'' Bloomberg's Timothy Burger reports. "She's on the board of E*Trade Bank, a subsidiary of E*Trade Financial Corp., while her husband sits on the Senate Banking Committee. She is lead director at Emmis Communications Corp., an Indianapolis radio-station operator that published Evan Bayh's 2003 memoir.

this is really what we are up against - it is not just the campaign contributions, which are bad enough.
Wonder how many other tangled webs there are in Congress.
