Since 1929, the Democrats and Republicans have each held the Presidency for 40 years. During that time, the U.S. has had 14 recessions.

10 of them began when a Republican was sitting in the Oval Office:

Great Depression: 1929–1933 (Began under Hoover, Republican)

Recession of 1937: 1937–1938 (Began under Roosevelt, Democrat)

Recession of 1945: Feb-Oct 1945 (Began under Truman, Democrat)

Recession of 1948: Nov 1948–Oct 1949 (Began under Truman, Democrat)

Recession of 1953: July 1953–May 1954 (Began under Eisenhower, Republican)

Recession of 1958: Aug 1957–April 1958 (Began under Eisenhower, Republican)

Recession of 1960: April 1960–Feb 1961 (Began under Eisenhower, Republican)

Recession of 1969-70: Dec 1969–Nov 1970 (Began under Nixon, Republican)

Recession of 1973: Nov. 1973– March 1975 (Began under Nixon, Republican)

Recession of 1980: Jan-July 1980 (Began under Carter, Democrat)

Early 1980s recession: July 1981–Nov 1982 (Began under Reagan, Republican)

Early 1990s recession: July 1990–March 1991 (Began under Bush I, Republican)

Early 2000s recession: Mar-Nov 2001 (Began under Bush II, Republican)

Late 2000s recession: Dec 2007-current (Began under Bush II, Republican)

In the past 60 years, there have been 10 recessions. Only one, the relatively mild 6-month recession in early 1980, began while a Democrat held the oval office.

Coincidence?

4. Um, Vietnam?
JFK got us in, Johnson kept us in and escalated it. Nixon may have presided over the end of it but it would not be truthful to say we win all of our wars and lay that at Nixon's doorstep entirely.

Truth is the only winners of wars are military contractors.

6. I don't like these kinds of lists
First of all, I assume it only uses the technical definition for a recession. Second of all, many of the recessions are not the fault of the president. Finally, most experts say the financial decisions made by a president take at least 12 months before the impact hits the economy.

For instance, the March 2001 recession was not Bush's fault. It was also neither Clinton's fault, but rather an unprovoked buying craze of tech stocks (see tulip bulb craze). Likewise, what Obama is experiencing now is not his fault, but this one IS the fault of Bush, primarily due to his support and agenda of crazy low interest rates and lack of government oversight.

Thus, I agree with the premise that Republicans are actually worse for the economy, but the picture is a LOT more complex than what is painted above.
