Wisdom dictates we stop demonizing Republicans
Statesmanship is compromise
Politics is theater.
We are not the only sincere party.

Right now we need statesmen not court jesters.

All of them were sent there to work it out.
Have the arguments, hammer out our national priorities.
Agree on what can be agreed upon
Put the good of the nation above all else.
Incremental steps forward are better than standing still.

Republicans don't want to get along with us. They didn't want it when they had the majority and they don't want it now. They named the tune, it's their turn to dance.

that bastard went around calling moderate republicans RINO's
so what do we do the moment we win a majority....

we start calling folks who are on our side in the broadest sense DINO's
splintering away from the very reps we voted for and celebrated their win last January
now a mere six months later here its widely accepted they are crooked bastards who should be hated
does that sound very smart to you?
We are falling into the same trap... with such glee... it astounds me.

120. If we end up with Democrat Health care
we all win. And win. and Win. Like when we got Democrat Social Security and Democrat Medicare. The people receiving health care win. The people switching over to a less costly insurance win. The hospitals that will get paid instead of having unpaid debts owed to them will win. The employers who get a little relief on HCI cost win. The Democrats who are responsible win, both in a practical voter impact sense, and in a carmic having helped people sense. The economy wins. The only ones who lose are Insurance corps and Republicans.
So which "we all" are you referring to?

they hang it on us, and there can be no denials.
We all know how easy it is for them to take one little occurance and turn it into a damaging slogan.

with the war in Iraq, which the republicans deserve the blame for...

They have the cover of saying Kerry, Clinton,Edwards and others voted for it too!

I so wish more people here could see this.I wish we could have a little more cover.

15. Bullshit.
There is NO proof that they:

are sincere,
were sent there to work it out,
agree on what can be agreed on (the word is 'compromise')
put the good of the nation above all else.

They are NOT sincere - if they were they would not throw money at the rich at the expense of the poor;
They were NOT sent there to work it out - they were sent their to support the corporatist agenda, period;
They will NOT agree, or compromise, on anything - it is their way or no way, and we can expect nothing else from them;
They do NOT put the good of the nation above the good of their party and the corporations which own it.

We finally have the power to work without compromising our ideals - to compromise now is to surrender.

Fuck em. They ARE demons.

Edited on Wed Jul-22-09 04:29 PM by RandomThoughts
Empathy circles.

(Note: This stereotype Republicans and Democrats, and is not correct in all cases, but is only an example, many Republicans are really caring, have large amounts of caring, and many Republicans also care across much of society, and many Democrats are also selfish)

If you think of 'caring' as a combination of empathy for others, being able to feel how they feel about things. And include caring for oneself as part of caring, (although caring for self is actually selfish, its is easier to think of that way.)

A sociopath would have a caring graph like this.

11....................................................................................
11....................................................................................
111...................................................................................
111...................................................................................
1111...................................................................................
self--family-friends-associates-strangers-other groups that are really different-enemies.

The sociopath only cares for self, he can do things for others but only if it returns something to him, so it is not caring. That is the counting favors type mentality or deal making between groups, where a sociopath can help someone else, but it is still for self.

Many Republicans have smaller empathy circles. So their caring graph looks sorta like this.
...111111111- (they may even have more empathy for people like friends then for self(loyalty))
..11111111111111.........................................................................
11111111111111111111.....................................................................
111111111111111111111111.................................................................
111111111111111111111111111111111........................................................
self--family-friends-associates-strangers-other groups that are really different-enemies.

Many groups even teach not caring to maintain an emotional detachment to people to be able, in theory, make tough decisions.

Generals will often learn to not think as much about soldiers they sends to battle, he cares about them greatly but has to suppress that to send them to battle.

Soldiers learn to care less about their enemy(although that is not US training, US military trains that empathy for the enemy is part of winning a battle, since the goal is ultimately a better place for that society. In the 40s it was hate the enemy, that is not taught anymore.)

Some Doctors often limit feeling of caring for patients so they do not feel their pain as much.

And some business people, to be able to make a profit by someone else suffering also limit caring.

Even the concept of tough love says people have to limit caring to not be enablers.

And 'feeling someones pain' actually increases suffering in the world, but it does that to fix the suffering it feels, the empathy is the bell in someones head to tell them to do something to help someone. However many argue to much empathy for those you can't help just adds suffering, but many times people don't know they can help until they try, and they don't try until they care.

The tough love is the idea behind pull yourself up by your boot straps, and that limited caring allows for people to think others should be in fear or starve to motivate them to try harder. But many times tough love is actually 'not caring for self reasons' with the excuse of tough love.

Democrats, usually have a bigger circle, (you can see that example clearly by how Peta even has animals in their empathy circle, while green peace even includes whales)
The Liberal mind often has both more available caring, and also it is spread out over more people.

..........................................................................................
.........111111111........................................................................
.......11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111........................
...1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111...........
1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111
self--family-friends-associates-strangers-other groups that are really different-enemies.

But liberals are also more likely to give up selfish things, or even things that might help friends and family to help others.

So look at the Republican graph, and the Democrat's graph, and you can see why the Democrats want to work together and the Republicans want to take advantage of the Democrats when they do.

I think alot of how to think of it is you can be kind to an enemy or someone in another group without giving up ones own values. So you can be willing to reach across aisle, but when the Republican side is only asking for things for their group, it literally has no value. Since the Democrats are already pretty much trying to help all groups, and the Republicans want to bump up their own group. Note when they think of the suffering of the rich, they figure they are doing ok. While the Repubs only care about certain groups, so even if they are doing ok, that is where their efforts to help go.

So the bipartisan between really caring people and those out for self makes cooperation much more difficult.

22. What they stand for on most issues is not good for the nation by any stretch of the imagination
Unless, of course, you think that the Gilded Age was a good time for the nation. Obama tried offering them an olive branch, agreeing to stop the partisan attacks if they could seriously agree to work for the good of the nation. They rejected the olive branch and demonstrated that they were more interested in beating the President than doing what is good for the nation.

31. Quite The Contrary, Sir: Wisdom Requires Exposing Clearly The Demonic Nature Of That Party
You are doubtless a decent sort, and as most good-hearted people do, you have difficulty realizing there are people who are not decent sorts at heart. The Republican party has for the last forty years based itself on exploitation of racism and religious intolerance, as the weapons necessary to gain mass following for a program of enriching a business oligarchy who pay their bills. In doing this their chief weapon has been the flat, bald-faced lie. Over the past two decades, it has become abundantly clear that the Republican party does not adhere to the democratic compact of a free society: they refuse to abide by the results of elections when the polls go against them, and when turned out of office by the majority of the people bend all their efforts to make the country ungovernable.

"You can't reason with this man...."

59. Being negative doesn't prove she or he is a right-wing troll
That last link has cleveramerican agreeing with Bertman's post on August 14th:

Here's an idea:

He's the President. How about he TELLS US what HE wants to see in the health care reform legislation? Why doesn't HE tell Americans what HE thinks needs to be done to correct this goddam mess we are currently in?

He's OUR LEADER. It's time for him to lead by telling the country and the Democrats what he wants for America.

If he leaves this up to Congress the lobbyists will win in a landslide. And Americans will once again be screwn.

My guess is that many folks here on DU would sympathize with this post, even if it is "negative".

when you constantly criticize Democrats while asking us to be kinder and gentler to Republicans. The only time you seem to agree with Democrats comes in the form of praise for those standing in the way of public option or healthcare reform. WTF?

Your criticism of Dems goes back longer than the Obama administration. In these threads from 2006 you criticized Clinton, Carter and Rev. Lowery for their remarks at Coretta Scott King's funeral. Which is the position people like Michelle Malkin took.

It's one thing to disagree, it's another to disagree only with Democrats on a message board that supports Democrats.

It is ridiculous. Because we do have actual idiot trolls on here does not mean that every idea that is not pre approved by committee should be banned, or that person should automatically be suspicious. I am not a conservative democrat, I consider myself to be very liberal, but I am really getting sick of this lockstep mentality. Now predictably everyone will jump on my ass, question my progressive credibility, blah, blah, blah... totally predictable

I certainly don't have to "demonize" Republicans. Just look, for example, at the insane people at the public fora on health care. They are not Dems. To say that they are possessed by demons is practically factual. Yet I haven't even said that. But I do say that they are deluded RW wingnuts. That they are also Republicans is factual.
By your use of "Democrat" rather than "Democratic" where it should be in a post further down, you have betrayed yourself.
Not so clever after all.

from participating. Last I knew, we were waiting for them to come up with a plan for healthcare, and they didn't. Then we offered them coops, and they didn't want to play that game either.

turned out they never wanted healthcare reform, but they couldn't admit it.

They're in charge of their game. They're making fools of themselves and we're hardly the only people noticing that fact. They may never recover from the disaster of the past 8 years-- because they refuse to take any responsibility for it.

returning prayer to public schools, abolishing the IRS, denouncing affirmative action, denouncing gay rights; basically reversing every position the Democrats are identified with on virtually every issue - the Republican Party will not believe the Democrats are cooperating or trying to be bipartisan.

Republicans are true believers. They don't believe in compromise.

No one was more "bipartisan" than Bill Clinton and they impeached him and genuinely considered him a left-wing extremist. The Republican Party of today is a lot more extreme than that group was in the 90's.

Wanting to compromise is noble. But unfortunately, short of calling upon all Democrats to renounce everything they have ever believed in and fought for, there is no alternative but to fight and fight and fight for what we know is right.

If this was the old traditional Republican Party of Gerald Ford or even Bob Dole - compromise would be possible. But it is not. The simple cold reality is, today's Republican Party is a party of extremist authoritarians who are convinced that the progressive perspective is an un-American - anti-Christian plot to destroy America.

to stop demonizing those who act like demons. However, an incremental step, certainly being better than standing still, is still deeply frustrating when we have so far to go. I fear the country will soon return to fearful conservatism, and no further progress will be made for another 10 or 20 years. How many people must die in that time? Let's see - 18,000 per year who lack health care die, x10 equals 180,000, x20 equals 360,000 people who may - DIE. It really is not acceptable.

Obama and the democrats in Congress have been more than fair to the Republicans. The stimulus, the Democrats let the Republicans have many amendments, but only about 4 Republicans voted for it. As for the health care reform bill. the Democrats have let the Republicans have 100 amendments. Do you know that the amendments added by the Republicans cause the whole "death panel" controversy? They add all these amendments and have the nerve to say the bill is too long. Obama reaches out and the Republicans continue to lie.

128. But they *are* demons.
Republican = Criminal
Conservative = Selfish Jerk

This is the New Math that millions of Americans are now learning. Personally, I am so sick of right-wingers I could scream. I thought things would get better when we won everything, but if anything it's worse.

If the wackaloons are this crazy and unhinged after seven months, how will they possibly handle four or eight years?

Go ahead and demonize them. Why not? They're frackin' demons sent from Hell to torment Real Americans.

131. Compromise is a two-way street. And so far the Dems *ARE* the only sincere party.
When the same Repugs Obama is negotiating with publicly say they will not support the very compromise they themselves are working on - Obama & the Dems aren't the problem.

141. if 'we' become 'them' then they have won-
"Demonizing" the Republicans is only becoming them.

There are far too many honest, genuine, salient criticisms which can be made about most of the stands taken by the republicans- collectively and on an individual basis. We can do that, and continue to work towards unity for our country.

Which is not completely possible, but if we don't work towards it, we WILL destroy ourselves.

Your message isn't going to be popular, but most of the hard truths in this world aren't.

I'm k&r-
