Obamas pick a church
@ 9:26 am by Jeremy P. Jacobs

President Obama has settled on a D.C. church congregation to join and it isn't one that was on most onlookers radar screens.

Time Magazine reports that Obama will join Evergreen Chapel, a nondenominational church at Camp David. It is the same church that President George W. Bush joined when he was in office.

Obama's search for a congregation in D.C. has been well documented. Time's Amy Sullivan provides the rationale behind the move:

A number of factors drove the decision - financial, political, personal - but chief among them was the desire to worship without being on display. Obama was reportedly taken aback by the circus stirred up by his visit to 19th Street Baptist in January. Lines started forming three hours before the morning service, and many longtime members were literally left out in the cold as the church filled with outsiders eager to see the new President. Even at St. John's, which is so accustomed to presidential visitors that it is known as the "Church of the Presidents," worshippers couldn't help themselves from snapping photos of Obama on their camera phones as they walked down the aisle past him to take communion.

4. I was all set to sneer at the thought of this as a significant story.
But this is nice. Our Prez goes nondenominational and nigh-invisible, putting faith where it belongs, IMO.

14. Yeah, well, once a month....
.... isn't QUITE that I had in mind (and that's about how often they make it to Camp David) but .... ya know ... baby steps and all.

There's a church ACROSS the street from the White House .... the one they went to on Inauguration morning ..... or invite their friends/staff to worship with them in the movie theater in the East Wing. It doesn't have to be all that elaborate. Just DO IT.

Edited on Mon Jun-29-09 11:35 AM by Clio the Leo
.... in the speech in Denver when he said?

At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Let us keep that promise - that American promise - and in the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/28/barack-obama-democratic-c_n_122224.html

That's from Hebrews 10:23.

The NEXT two verses read...

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Barack Obama is a Christian, he makes no bones about that ... and Christians are supposed to go to church. Any argument to the contrary is simply making an excuse. I dont say this as a citizen to her President, I say it as a Christian to her brother in Christ. ;)

... the cult of apostrophe users. ;)

(Actually, I cant lie in the church thread. I have a habit of not using them in "dont")

I actually prefer to think about it as a high-heel wearing, pie-eating socialist/humanitarian commune with a penchant for singing folks songs but, ya know, semantics and all.

26. You're part of the
Quick Cult:rofl: And, as far as criticizing the prez..I feel like writing him one of those letters that he reads each night and telling him.."You can do it!" "Quit smoking that 5%..you're strong enough and you promised Michelle!"

I know how hard it is to quit..I did after two years in the '70's when it was 25 cents a pack in Asheville, NC.

17. Oops! UPDATE:
http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2009/06/obamas_church_hunt_work_in_pro.html

snip//

But apparently Time got it wrong.

"The president and first family continue to look for a church home,'' White House spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said today. "They have enjoyed worshipping at Camp David and several other congregations over the months, and will choose a church at the time that is best for their family."

The suggestion behind Time's report about the Camp David sanctuary was that the president was unhappy about the public disruption caused by his limited appearances at the 19th Street Baptist Church in Washington on the weekend before his inauguration and his more recent Sunday visit to St. John's Episcopal Church across a park from the White House. Former President George W. Bush and wife Laura often attended St. John's on Sundays.

The 150-seat Evergreen Chapel at Camp David, a rustic stone-and-glass structure, was built using private money. President George H.W. Bush dedicated it in 1991. Each week, Time notes, regardless of whether the president is there, Evergreen Chapel holds nondenominational Christian services open to the nearly 400 military personnel and staff at Camp David and their families.

If it takes a village to raise a child, and a motorcade to move the president around town, it takes a fleet of helicopters to ferry him to Camp David, and the truth is, the president hasn't spent much time there since his election.

The first family plans to spend the long Fourth of July weekend at the cool mountain retreat, about 1,500 feet above sea level and the heat of Washington, before the president heads to Moscow and a Group of Eight summit in Italy the following week.

When he comes home from the G-8, and also a side trip to Ghana on that international journey, it appears the president and first family still will be looking for a church they can call home.

I am of the opinion going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than sitting in my garage will make me a car. If it makes them happy to go to church it makes me happy. JMHO.
