Rep. Neugebauer: ‘I Don’t Know’ If Obama Is A Citizen
Rep. Bill Posey’s (R-FL) bill aimed at casting doubt over the citizenship status of President Obama appears to be gaining momentum within the Republican Party. The bill would require candidates for President to supply their birth certificates to the Federal Elections Commission to be eligible to run. Placating fringe elements of the right-wing movement who refuse to believe that President Obama was born in America, Posey himself has refused to say if he believes that the President was born in Hawaii.

Though initially it appeared he had little support, Posey eventually gained Rep. John Culberson (R-TX), Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX), Rep. Robert Goodlatte (R-VA), and Rep. John Carter (R-TX) as cosponsors. Last week, Rep. John Campbell (R-CA) also signed on as a sponsor of the bill, while Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) said that he would support the bill if it reaches the Senate.

Speaking to the Texas-based Chad Hasty radio show yesterday, Neugebauer explained his support for the “birther” movement:

Q: So you believe the President is a US citizen?

NEUGEBAUER: You know I don’t know. I’ve never seen him produce documents that would say one way or another.

1. Guy probably has a lot of fans at DU
Some DUers have taken to parroting the right wing tripe about an "Anointed One," so why shouldn't they move into birther nonsense next?

18. A certain sort of DUer was huge on the birth certificate thing a few months ago...
I wonder if they sincerely changed their minds, or if they were just lying their asses off then, and hoping nobody remembers?

28. The part where they erratically cast about red herrings
while still sermonizing like Jesus on the Mount can get fairly long for my tastes. They should cut to the chase and implode a bit faster. Other than that, I enjoy the show.

15. OC Weekly Has A Great Profile On Birthers - This Is The GOP Base?
This is a funny, yet disturbing, profile of one of the most prominent birthers, and it just illustrates just how deranged these folks are. Also, I believe that the woman profiled in this article may be a constituent of John Campbell.

16. I, for one, am quite glad that someone is finally doing this.
It makes it easy to see exactly just who the frothing crazies are, if they all decide to actually list themselves as co-sponsors of the proposed bill.

They can't hide behind the white sheets this way.

I hope millions of dollars of supporter money is wasted on such insane pursuits such as the birther nonsense.

17. could we add an attachment to the bill, which would obviously eliminate many repugs,
that a Republican has to provide proof of having an IQ, or at least a brain cell?

26. A member of the House is unaware of the Supreme Court's refusal to hear a case regarding
exactly that? Does he not believe in his friends Alito, Scalia, Thomas, and Roberts? Does he not think that they would not have bent over backwards to serve the GOP had there been the slightest scrap of doubt?

What an idiot. But what do you expect from the right?

33. Any jackass who wants proof from the President
must also produce proof that they and their family members are not members of the Ku Klux Klan and prove they are not aliens for Tralfamadore or Remulak.
Then again, if they're off on a tangent they have less time to spend hurting the American people.

35. What is the difference between the KKK and the Republican Party?
Sorry to say as a person born and raised in the South that unfortunately there is little difference except to curtail the KKK's most grievous crimes. Reagan's Southern strategy that exploited racism that yet corrupts the hearts of far too many. When it was coupled with Christian Fundamentalism it entangled the Republican Party in a web in which it will be extremely difficult for it to ever escape. The legacy of the Southern prejudice is much closer than many tend to realize. For example my grandfather was born in 1860 and his father in 1830. Three or four generations does not allow for that much change to take place in eradicating people's prejudices that are passed on from father to son.
