Poll question: What is the main reason Repukes don't want Americans to have health care?
Pick the one reason that's most driving the obstruction

That's the LAST thing conservatives want to see.

See the 1960's.

5. Public health care moves to slow or stop the neocons goal of...
creating a two class society in America.

With health care cost one of the largest contributors to people declaring bankruptcy and foreclosures it is dragging more people into poor status.

Once everyone has been broken and there is the haves and the have nots, they can bring back the sweat shops and make American poor virtual slaves to the wealthy.

just a wedge issue that they've suckered in millions.

There's people out there who think the lying into bombing Iraq, warmonger, bush, is a moral man because he wouldn't finance planned parenthood, stem cell research, and does not want a woman to have a choice..at least that's his platform.

11. A combination of "luxury" and the fact that they want/need healthcare to be
tied to our jobs. Makes us more compliant, controllable, and connected to the capitalist system. What would they do if people started breaking out of the system because they knew there was care available when their children got sick?

But I also hear them call into CSPAN and rant and rave about the fact that it is a luxury and that you shouldn't get it if you can't afford it. Sure, sure, Republicans, whatever you say . . . till someone gets REALLY sick, and then we all pay for it anyway, so wouldn't it have been cheaper to pay for the preventive care instead of total kidney failure or a foot amputation? More proof that Republicans' self-centeredness is destroying this country, with the complicity of, sadly, the Dems in Congress and the White House.

How can it be that Congress "doesn't have the votes" for a public health care option, an option supported by more than 70% pf Americans? How can that beeeeeeeeeeee?

13. Tax funded health care lowers per capita contributions of all people but rich
The rich would pay more for universal health care via taxation than they do for their premiums. For all other segments of society, this is the opposite.

14. They do not believe in government programs, such as SS, Medicare/Medicaid
They cannot tolerate entitlements, because that means the government would have to raise taxes to pay for them and they hate taxes.

They believe everyone should be self-sufficient and be able to keep as much of their hard-earned money as possible. To hell with anyone who needs their help.

As far as I'm concerned, Repugs are selfish people.

18. Although just about all of the options listed above are likely true
I'm sure that their biggest fear is that it would be a TREMENDOUS FDR-/New Deal-like accomplishment for President Obama, one that would virtually guarantee his re-election in 2012 and probably one or two more Democratic Presidents beyond him and that universal health coverage will likely become a "fourth rail" of American politics like Social Security and impossible for them to simply tear down later. They know, like they did back in 1993-1994 that adopting a system that allows for universal health insurance coverage would be their "waterloo" IMHO.

They were able to successfully torpedo it back in 1993-1994 then due to the general climate of animosity towards the Clintons, the questionable nature of the plan (although at least they actually had one), as well as the hysteria that they (and Harry & Louise) were able to gin up about the "horrors" of "socialized medicine" but the Repukes have MUCH less clout and are much weaker now and it will probably be virtually impossible for them to defeat health care reform now, particularly since the situation in regards to health care has gotten even worse than what it was like back then and just about everybody but the wealthy have been negatively affected and knows firsthand just how bad the situation really is. The only people who seem to be standing in the way right now are the Blue Dog Dems in the Senate but it sounds like Conrad may be coming around to a "public option" plan, so that might be a good sign.

20. If Obama pulls this off, it'll do two things.
One, it'll all but seal up reelection in 2012 barring an extreme fuckup.

Two, it'll become the new "third rail" of politics--Republicans will not be able to touch it without appearing to be the cold, unfeeling jackasses they are. It'll become like Social Security--you DO NOT FUCK WITH SOCIAL SECURITY.

25. I think it's probably a little of all 4...
But mostly #4 out of all of them. Universal healthcare would set Obama up for another term hands down and be the foundation for a historic legacy. Which is why I'm so confused about why some Senate Dems aren't in line with this. This is when lobbyist money comes into play more than votes. I mean, money affects the Rethugs too, but they have other motives as well.

27. Mainly #4. They've said as much themselves.
In 1993 conservative pundit Irving Kristol advised the GOP that the Clinton proposal "should not be amended; it should be erased," because "it will revive the reputation of the party that spends and regulates, the Democrats, as the generous protector of middle-class interests.“

In 2008, the Cato Institute has stated that “blocking Obama's health plan is key to the GOP's survival. If Obama succeeds in passing health care, then people who might have been conservatives will like it, and will be more likely to vote for the people who passed it.“

34. If this passes without GOP support, THEY ARE DONE!
The GOPers in the house and senate have got to do the math on this one.
If they don't own this and support a public option and it passes anyway, they are toast electorally. The anti-entitlement arguments go out the window and they lose swing states left and right.

So they're playing politics with people's lives. Real funny, guys...but we're not laughing.

33. Repuke Pols Are Soulless Assholes
Who enjoy watching people suffer. Suffering makes them feel better about themselves and the shitty choices that they've made with their lives. They love sucking up to power, but they hate themselves for doing so. That is, until they see someone suffering from a health condition. Then, it makes all that sucking up feel a lot better.

If your health insurance is tied to your employment, you're not going to quit even if you're treated like dirt, overworked & underpaid for the benefit of the people at the top. I personally know plenty of people who would become self-employed tomorrow if they didn't have to worry about health insurance.
