The Verdict Is In: Americans overwhelmingly endorse public health insurance option

Verdict: Americans overwhelmingly endorse public health insurance option
By Russell Krauss
Boise Liberal Examiner
June 21, 2009

The latest New York Times/CBS poll confirms what a number of other recent surveys, including the Kaiser Family Foundation tracking poll and one from Consumer Reports, have demonstrated: most of the American people, a super majority of two-thirds or more, support the creation of a public option, a clone or extension of Medicare, as part of health insurance reform. The New York Times strongly endorsed the plan in a lengthy editorial today.

1. Yeah, but no one wants to pay for it.
This is exactly why we're in this mess in the first place - Americans overwhelmingly want programs and earmarks, but they refuse to up their taxes or pay for them in any way.

The fact of the matter is we need to convince people that they'll ultimately save money even if taxes get raised (and they absolutely will). I cannot fathom why someone hasn't put out some kind of calculator to show how a single payer option would save someone money. MoveOn or CAP should be all over this.

3. I can't believe that they think their taxes would go up more than they'd
stop paying into for profit health insurance companies.

4. My thoughts exactly.
People are morons. That's my only explanation.

5. Brainwashed at least - all taxes are "bad" things. Except for the one's
they don't think about - like the gasoline tax that funds the roads they drive on.

It makes a lot of sense actually - there's probably no one in the country who is in 100% agreement with everything their tax money got spent on. So everyone's got a reason to gripe - and think that taxes are bad. I don't want another $1 of my tax money going to fund endless wars - but I'm willing to have 100 times that amount be spent making sure that every person in America has access to healthcare

2. Yes, but enough to riot and/or strike if it's "off the table"?
Most Americans probably don't realize that what THEY want means almost nothing to their members of Congress. If the country were shut down by that 2/3 majority, we might actually get someone's attention. If not, Big Insurance will triumph over the people.
