Poll question: Can a person have more than one master?
By master, I am referring to loyalty to politicians, loyalty to political ideas, loyalty to religious ideals, loyalty to crack cocaine, etc.

1. Of course
Anyone who's married and also works ends up with at least two masters.

2. Your work wants you to stay late but your spouse wants you to come home anyway.
Both are being extremely insistent. What do you do?

5. So you would choose your boss' wishes over your wife's wishes in regard to this situation?

9. If my wife wants to eat, I wouldnt have a lot of choice
In real life, I did this once years back.

When my wife called and told me her invalid mother had just died I left work to be with her without worrying about my job.

10. Seems to me that when push comes to shove your wife is more important to you than your job.
There is nothing wrong with that in my eyes.

6. "Special" can mean different things when used to describe people.
Let's go with all men and women.

11. because it's base -- and people tend to want to
cover up an obvious desire for that which is base -- at least if you are in politics, religion, etc -- drug dealers and ceo's not so much.

we even fool ourselves regarding money.

but we will bend ourselves to those who create a flow of money to us.
isn't that the very problem with contemporary american politics?

we talk about everything except the money?

16. Jesus Said That "No Man Can Serve Two Masters"
but then proceeded to undercut his point by discussing what happens when someone does in fact have two masters. And I don't believe the options in this case are God and mammon.

19. You mean Jesus "render to Caesar that which is Caesar and unto God that which is God's" Jesus?
I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.

17. You mean like loving both barbecue beef ribs AND mango sherbert?
My thoughts immediately turn to that episode where Greg Brady set up two dates on the same night and had to keep running back and forth between the girl in the game room and the girl in the den. I think a change of clothes he was wearing on those two different dates was also involved, which only added to the zaniness, as evidenced by the laugh track.

Needless to say, Mike Brady had an assload of words of wisdom to dish out on Greg after the last commercial break.

22. Maybe I am over thinking this.
But to me, you can be loyal to a lot of things without any of them being your master. My ex husband thought he was my master and I was loyal to him for seventeen years (although I can't say the same for him). Imagine his surprise when I divorced him and he discovered he not only was not my master but was not even needed by me. I tell everyone that my doctors are good, but I tell my doctors when I disagree with them. (much to their ire) Meaning loyalty doesn't automatic mean obedience or submissiveness.

I have been loyal to Obama but do not always agree with him and he is not my master. I guess I just don't believe in the whole master thing. I learned at a young age that all men have feet of clay, there are no mortal gods and perhaps no religious ones either. I believe I am my own master and loyal to my own ideals.
