Right after his victory was announced. The video is from my point-and-shoot camera, so please excuse the graininess.

When the west coast was about to close, I was amazed about what was about to happen, but I couldn't breathe until it was actually called.

The reactions of the supporters really get me as well, I have one particular favorite that comes to mind

12. I keep a copy of MSNBC's election night coverage

and I will admit (on an anonymous message board only) that I watch it quite a bit to re-live that magic moment forever!

18. I have a copy of it too, and will always keep it.
For a lot of reasons...

...because there was such a superficial, well-publicized effort beforehand by MSNBC to satisfy the critics who accused Tweety and Keith of bitching and carping at each other during the conventions to "demote them from the anchor spot for the election coverage" by replacing them with David Gregory...yet when the call came, David deferred to Keith and let him do it. I don't think the network had any real intention of letting its critics tell it what to do with Tweety and Keith on election night, because it knew that any ratings it got were not because of David Gregory, but because of Tweety and Keith. And that was the proof.

...the emotion you can hear in Keith's voice, both as he realizes what has happened and as he tries to do right by history in reporting it. You can tell he's already thinking "This is going to be in my already extensive video library of my complete career: calling the election of the first black President. So I damn well better make it good." And you can feel his pride in knowing it's going to be in there. But at the same time, you can feel the sheer humble awe and privilege he feels at being alive and employed in the newscasting business at that point in history, that enabled him to do this.

...Tweety's remarks about how it changes everything, about how kids who grow up after this night are going to just grow up assuming that a black man can be president, in a way that none of us alive today ever did or could. About how we might just as well have had a "WHITES ONLY" sign on the White House prior to that, but now we no longer do.

...Gene's remarks about talking to his parents and how emotional they were, and how happy he was to be able to share the night with them, and how much he missed the people in his life who hadn't lived long enough to share it. And about how, from now on, when he tells his son black people can do anything, including become the President, he will be telling "the truth."
