Martinez predicts Sotomayor will be confirmed
Posted: 12:52 PM ET

From CNN Congressional Producer Ted Barrett

Following a one-on-one meeting with Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida predicted the Supreme Court nominee will confirmed by the Senate.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Following a one-on-one meeting with Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida predicted the Supreme Court nominee will confirmed by the Senate.

"I would expect that she would be confirmed with pretty good numbers," he told reporters.

Martinez stopped short of endorsing her nomination, saying he wants to wait until after her confirmation hearings are held. But he had very positive things to say about her personal and judicial background, and said she would "fit in" very well on the Supreme Court.

Martinez, the only Hispanic Republican in the Senate, said he is not concerned about Sotomayor's controversial "wise Latina" comments because he said there is no evidence that sentiment has influenced her judicial decisions.

"For someone who is of Latin background, personally, I understand what she is trying to say. Which is, the richness of her experience forms who she is. It forms who I am," Martinez said.

1. How long before Martinez is called a racist RINO by his own party?

4. Isn't he going to retire?
This would be the only way he can afford to say this.

This is why I wish that the White House, as well as Feinstein, did not try to "explain" Sotomayor's comments. But follow Martinez example.

6. Yes. He will not run for re-election in 2010. Gov. Charlie Crist is running for his seat.

5. Uh oh, now he's REALLY going to have to apologize to Limpballs.
Not just for what he said but for who he is, and how his experience formed him. ;-)

7. So true. Most of the time, a minority will have more empathy than a majority.
Not always, but usually.

8. As a Florida resident, I can truly say
this is the first time I have agreed with Martinez. I usually write e-mails to him complaining about his vote on one thing or another. I think I will write an e-mail to let him know I agree with him. FINALLY!!!
