IL-Sen: Schakowsky Out
Sorry, open seat fans:

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) has decided not to run for Senate in 2010, according to an announcement from her campaign. Schakowsky said Monday that she will run for re-election in her northern Chicago district instead of competing for the seat currently held by Sen. Rolland Burris (D-Ill.).
With Schakowsky now out of the picture, we can turn our eyes to Illinois AG Lisa Madigan, who is keeping her options open for 2010. While the nomination would be hers for the taking, somehow I'd still be surprised if she decided to pursue the opportunity.

1. Two signs that Madigan is not running.

1. She has been raising cash far in excess of the federal limits. She can use that money to run for a state office, e.g. Governor or another AG term, but not for the Senate.

2. She attacked the Governor for shifting state income towards a progressive income tax and away from the regressive sales and property taxes.

It is a weird thing. Since entering the workforce full-time in 1985, I have lived through one federal income tax increase (which did not touch me), at least nine federal income tax decreases, one state income tax increase, a million (give or take) state/local sales tax increases and a property tax increase every third year.

So what concerns people? Income tax. They grumble about the other taxes, but it is income taxes that piss them off. Cut after cut after cut after cut with hardly an increase in the past three decades. But everyone STILL carps on incessantly about the income tax.

Some day I will retire. And my income will decrease dramatically. Despite that decrease I will still be paying the same sales and property taxes. But I will pay much less in income tax. Can people just not fucking think more than a day or two in advance?
