AP says it's Sonia Sotomayor.
AP says it's Sonia Sotomayor, of 2nd Circuit, to replace Souter. Not yet independently confirmed. If true, first Hispanic Justice on Court.

53. The people I mentioned are Americans
who have been underrepresented on the supreme court. But yes, it is a victory for all Americans--that goes without saying.

61. I don't agree at all.
For the simple reason that one of our most compelling arguments for equality and against said underrepresentation is that we need the fullness of our diversity in order to succeed as a modern, just, and thriving society. We need all Americans in the game if we're going to compete in a 21st century, flat-earth society. Not to mention that we need to be inclusive - not exclusive - in our desire to achieve equality, as inclusiveness is supposed to be the entire point in the first place.

So no, I don't believe that it goes merely without saying that it's a victory for all Americans. It really does need to be said.

34. They'll have to go for some "moderate" Democrats like Ben Nelson
Edited on Tue May-26-09 08:10 AM by CreekDog
Nelson has taken the principled stand that Bush's supreme court picks should not be filibustered and in keeping with that principle he has stated that Obama's pick may be filibustered.

30. This seems to have been confirmed and she seems a very good choice
Gephardt, though not exciting, might have actually been a better choice than Edwards. He was the son of a milk man, who chose public service and he likely would have had Senator Kerry's back - something the narcissistic Edwards refused to do for fear it could hurt his image.

36. One of the most successful things about Obama is how he
challenges the stupidity that plagues our discourse. i.e. muslim, socialist, Wright, Ayers Now, he picks a justice that the GOP and others have already been challenging through YouTube whisper campaigns. He takes their stupid symbolism and throws it in their face.
