Steele: Obama ‘Was Not Vetted Because The Press Fell In Love With The Black Man Running For The Office’

Apparently unable to learn from egregious mistakes from the recent past, RNC Chairman Michael Steele once again took to the radio airwaves today as a guest host for Bill Bennett. Earlier this week, Steele declared “an end to the era of Republicans looking backward.” This morning, however, Steele revisited the 2008 election to insist that President Obama had never been “vetted” because the press “fell in love with the black man”:

STEELE: The problem that we have with this president is that we don’t know (Obama). He was not vetted, folks. … He was not vetted, because the press fell in love with the black man running for the office. “Oh gee, wouldn’t it be neat to do that? Gee, wouldn’t it make all of our liberal guilt just go away? We can continue to ride around in our limousines and feel so lucky to live in an America with a black president.” Okay that’s wonderful, great scenario, nice backdrop. But what does he stand for? What does he believe? … So we don’t know. We just don’t know.

Steele lamented the “missed opportunity” in “dissecting” Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s influence on Obama, and “the lessons (Obama) learned at his (Wright's) knee.” Listen to it:

26. Steele knows damn well there's no interest in reaching out to the African American community
because he knows damn well what he's saying isn't going to cut it. But it does appeal to a certain racist subset of Republicans.

Steele has nothing to lose as he takes the low road - his future depends on how he comes out of this job - he makes no friends if he succumbs to reality.

15. Right, Mike. Hillary just let Obama glide into the nomination. She put up no fight what so ever....
...never challenged him or called him out or looked into every crook and cranny of his past. :sarcasm:

This guy is such a joke.

I'm really starting to believe that in his feeble mind somehow he truly believes that he belongs in the White House instead and he is raging with jealousy.

I have been trying to figure you out. I have seen you slam and trash Obama at every single turn, no matter how stupid your argument was or how crazy it made you look.

But now I see. You're one of those Never Say Never Hillary supporters. The ones they tell tales about to frighten school children in DC. One of those who are still so gobsmacked that Hillary did not win that they have to tear down the one who beat her every chance they get.

Never mind the fact that Obama is actually doing a very good job. Never mind that Hillary is thriving in her role as SoS and that there appears to be genuine harmony between the two of them. You hate him because he beat your girl. And you want the WORLD to know it.

Okay, snowdays. Duly noted. Now will you cut the crap??

49. I think she challenged him to think through many different
possibilities related to both domestic and foreign issues. A good opponent will do that no matter who that opponent is. And he respects her work and expertise. She is our SOS now and from what I can see they both are working for the good of the US. They seem to have a good relationship. Both set their differences aside and we are better for it.

25. The repubs strategy is obvious. Stupid, but obvious.
Edited on Fri May-22-09 02:18 PM by onenote
The numbers are clear. McCain captured a clear majority of the white vote in 2008. But Obama not only was the near unanimous choice of African Americans, but captured clear majorities of Latin and Asian voters. The white segment of the electorate is down to around 75% and shrinking. The repubs have two choices -- try to reach out to non-white voters or to try to divide the country by race and pick up an even greater percentage of white voters (or to pit asian and latin voters against black voters). They clearly have chosen the path of divisiveness, although using Michael Steele as their messenger is about as weird a way to go about pitting white, asian and latin voters against black voters as you could think of.

Or maybe their strategy is simply to increase their appeal to really stupid people, in which case they get high marks for choosing Steele as their front man.

They would have treated him like a celebrity and done everything from hiring paparazzi to digging through his trash. He can't really think that Obama's popularity created LESS interest in finding out all about this man. In this celebrity obsessive culture, people do everything they can to find all the fun little morsal and gossip on the person they idolize, just ask my uber twilight fan friends...lol I bet they know Rob Pattison more then he knows himself. So to say the Media was too blinded by admiration to get the real truth just doesn't fly with me.

I didn't believe it at first. I wanted to think they would not be so obvious. But they won't even let the guy have control of the money, so clearly the don't think that he is competent. And, did they know what Steele stood for? Oh, thats why they wigged out when he said he was prochoice, or that he thought Rush was an entertainer. The scenario he posed about President Obama applies more directly to him.
