Cheney Speech: Obama 'Deserves an Answer'
Cheney Speech: Obama 'Deserves an Answer'
May 21, 2009 7:25 AM

ABC News’ Jonathan Karl reports:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney today will offer some praise for President Obama in addition to a strong defense of Bush administration national-security policies, in a speech that will be delivered just minutes after Obama outlines his approach to key issues in fighting terrorism.

Cheney will make his national-security speech at the conservative American Enterprise Institute immediately following President Obama's 10:10 am ET speech at the National Archives.

"When President Obama makes wise decisions," Cheney will say, "he deserves our support. When he mischaracterizes the decisions we made, he deserves an answer."

"The responsibilities we carried belong to others now. And though I'm not here to speak for George W. Bush, I am certain that no one wishes the current administration more success in defending the country than we do. We understand the complexities of national security decisions. We understand the pressures that confront a president and his advisers..."

"Right now there is considerable debate in this city about the measures our administration took to defend the American people -- and especially about our methods of gathering intelligence. What I want to do today is set forth the strategic thinking that drove our policies..."

Cheney has told AEI that he won't start his speech until Obama is finished. Large television screen will bring Obama's speech live to Cheney and his audience at AEI.

Among Obama's "wise decisions,” according to Cheney: his approach to Afghanistan and his decision not to release the detainee abuse photos.

1. This is so not going to be a good day for those of us on the left
Why can't Obama spend some quiet time thinking about what truly needs to be said and why, oh, why can't Cheney just STFU?

2. Oh, I think today will be just fine
And I have every confidence president Obama has thought this through very carefully. Do you really think Americans give a damn what Dick Cheney thinks?

3. The mediawhores care and we will hear it over and over and over and over....
And Obama hasn't been doing such a great job with this Guantanamo, tribunal, torture mess this week. If he, OTOH, goes out there and says he was wrong and that he will appoint a special prosecutor to look into what happened in the last administration, then all will be good. I'm doubting that's what he's going to say.

4. Prepared to be dissapointed then
Because that is not what he's going to say. Do yourself a favor and don't even bother watching the damn speech.

7. The President will not tell you he's appointing a special prosecutor today.
Therefore, he sucks. Got it.

9. Some find life easier to cope with when they carve things up into little simplified litmus tests.
Big pictures escape them.

I've been here over five. Whose motives are more likely to be in question. I suggest if you want to understand my point of view, you read my last 10,000 posts or so.

You're behaving badly and contributing nothing to this conversation.

20. "revenge"? since when are consequences for lawbreaking "revenge"?
Edited on Thu May-21-09 08:38 AM by ima_sinnic
did you ever hear of "rule of law"?
it's a quaint notion that was enforced until 9 years ago. Now it has been thrown on the dustbin of history, along with habeas corpus.
we now have a system of "rule by a man." if that man does not consider certain crimes like treason, mass murder, plundering of the public treasury, unnecessary war for the sake of lining a few private pockets, torture/murder to extract false confessions, and outing of a CIA undercover agent to be illegal or criminal when committed by certain other people, then they are legal and not to be punished. but try stealing a loaf of bread from your local convenience store, driving away from a gas pump without paying, robbing your neighbor's lawn mower from his garage, smoking pot, or falsifying your income tax return, and see what happens to you. laws are for suckers who "seek revenge." riiiight.

28. Obama is trying to uphold his campaign promise
to close the Gulags and follow the principles in the Constitution when dealing with terrorists. Cheney is trying to keep his half dead ass out of prison.

deferring Dick if warranted, only strengthens chickenhawk Cheney's position.

Have fun dealing with this conscience free sociopath President Obama.

Perhaps we could get Chickenhawk Cheney to do a Subway commercial.

Five... five...

29. What I find disgusting is...
... that there are those that will mock, insult and harass ANYONE that posts anything conceived as a negative toward Obama when by all rights, the posts have valid concerns, especially when it comes to the fact that the Obama Administration is ignoring the facts that crimes WERE committed by the previous Administration and no one is pursuing the fact that many laws were and have been broken.

And to have to read posts by his most ardent supporters full of nothing but sarcasms, insults and childish antagonizing only goes to show that Obama has his own fringe supporters, much like * has and STILL has.

It is apparent that these 'supporters' would rather have DU be a forum of single-minded adorers instead of independent thinking supporters. That mind-set is what allowed * to do and say whatever he wanted and it is a nasty trait becoming more and more prevalent as the days progress here on DU.

And personally, I don't care if they decide to come after me because I could give a flying f*ck if they feel I 'besmirched' their childish attitudes toward constructive criticism, because it only shows their maturity levels as ADULTS are supposed to be above petty schoolyard antics. But so far, schoolyard is what DU has become until Skinner and the Mods put a stop to the incessant harassment of anyone that does not post loving posts in tribute to Obama. He has a job to do and either he follows the Rule of Law or we can continue to look like abettors to the eyes of the world... that decision is up to him.

Ok FLAME ON as I am ready to hear the same tune as always :nopity:
