in that area because of the Ozone layer? I heard a RWr complaining about it tonight. I don't know enough about freon to argue, but he seemed pretty convinced Obama would outlaw or restrict the use...especially in cars.

1. DuPont
began to phase out its production of Freon CFCs in the 1980s after federal regulatory agencies banned their use because they harm the Earth's ozone layer.<5>

In the 1990s, most uses of Freon chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were phased out.

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer classifies Freon-11 and Freon-12 as Annex A substances and bans their production and consumption as of 1996.

The interim replacements for CFCs are hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which contain chlorine that depletes stratospheric ozone, but to a much lesser extent than CFCs.<6>

It already happened years ago.

5. Thank you. I'm sure this is what he was referring to.
No matter what, they'll blame Obama as though it was his idea.

6. Like about everything else....
The smart guys have it covered long ago, and the idiots are just catching up. The hot rod/restoration crowd has been doing conversions from R12 (the old bad stuff) to R134a ( the better, but not perfect stuff)for near 2 decades.
The R134a is not quite as efficent as R12 was, but the newer AC components are sooo much more efficent, lighter, and smaller than 1st generation stuff that it more than makes up the difference.

You've encountered the automotive equivalent of a teabagger - blaming the Prez for stuff that Repubs fucked up when Regan was ridin' wooly mammoths.

7. You don't know how close you came to hitting the nail on the head.
This WAS because of automotive usage (hobbyists/collectors). Thank you!
