1. Elmo gets all the attention
while the needs of other characters like Oscar the Grouch, who lives in a freaking TRASH CAN, go overlooked despite the fact that they highlight the need for greater social spending. I guess we'd rather look at the cute red face of Sesame Street than its disadvantaged green underbelly.

Go ahead and try to tell me it's not the truth.

7. According to some of the jackbooted corporatists downthread
but they're just ignoring the essence of Sesame Street's class struggle :P

5. They've expanded the Grouch universe, though.
Check out Elmo in Grouchland (if you have kids) for Elmo's trip to a darker reality.

6. i get where you are going
but as I recall, Oscar sings 'I Love Trash' where he wouldn't trade a smelly, rotten fish wrapped in paper for a big pot of gold...
and his name is Oscar "the Grouch".
So apparently he likes living that way.

But he is most certainly an animal lover with his pet worm and elephant.

9. my one claim to fame is that Pete Seeger once mentioned my name on Sesame Street . . .
must have been around 1969 or 1970 . . . I'd been working on Pete's Clearwater project for awhile, and one day he called me with an unusual request . . . knowing that my last name is Polish, he asked if I knew how to say "Everybody loves Saturday night" in that language . . . seems he was scheduled to appear on Sesame Street and was planning to sing that song in a variety of languages, among them Polish . . .

being two generations removed from actual Polish stock, I hadn't a clue . . . so I asked my dad, who was born and raised in Brooklyn and still spoke a little Polish, but he didn't know either . . . I told Pete we'd try to find out and get back to him . . .

so Dad called a social club he knew in Brooklyn and asked only person in the place at the time -- the bartender -- if he could translate the phrase . . . luckily, he could . . . Dad wrote it down, we called Pete back, and Dad taught it to him phonetically over the phone . . .

so-o-o-o . . . a few weeks later we learned that Pete would be on Sesame Street, so naturally we tuned in . . . he began singing the song in a bunch of different languages, and when he got to the Polish part he said "I wanted to sing this in Polish, so I called my good friend Mike M. and his dad taught this to me" . . .

and he sang "Everybody love Saturday night" in Polish . . . :)
