**ACTION ALERT: http://moveon.org/public option **
Edited on Mon May-04-09 08:53 PM by supernova
Just got off the conference call with MoveOn and Dr Dean.

Go to the website and write your comments about healthcare and supporting a publicly financed option (a la medicare for everyone)

MoveOn will deliver them to Senator Kerry who has promised to take them into the mtg and make them part of the record.

edit: The meeting is tomorrow morning

3. Sorry to be dense, but what is "The Public Option?"
There seem to be so many things discussed these days, and the terms are so vague -- even, "We need to pass healthcare!" (Pass *what* healthcare?!)

Are we talking single-payer, government-run program?

Or public funds toward "affordable care" = insurance?

5. Something like medicare for everyone
Edited on Mon May-04-09 08:59 PM by supernova
It would compete with existing private insurance plans, but be accessible to people and be on a subsidized sliding scale rate.

The long-term goal is that the publicly funded program would eventually squeeze out the private plans because it will be more efficient overall: less administrative costs, more efficient payments to providers and using less of their resources for proper billing and all that happy jazz.

edit: spelling

8. Publicly funded through payroll taxes?
As in, "mandatory?" (That's the way to go, imho.) Or, how funded?

15. It would be voluntary at first
You would sign up for the federal-financed plan the same way you sign up through other health plans at work. I imagine that it would be payroll deduction, like it is now.
