Obama Administration Gets High Marks on Swine Flu So Far
Roughly two-thirds approve across all regions and levels of worry

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans give the Obama administration high marks for its handling so far of the continuing spread of swine flu, or H1N1 virus, in the United States. In a Gallup Poll conducted Tuesday night, 66% of Americans say they approve of how the administration is handling the situation, while 16% disapprove and 17% have no opinion.

This 66% approval rating for the administration's handling of the swine flu outbreak is on par with President Barack Obama's 63% overall job approval rating in Gallup Poll Daily tracking conducted April 26-28, 2009, though the 16% disapproval is much lower than the president's 31% disapproval overall.

47% of Republicans approve of the administration's handling of swine flu, compared to 83% of Democrats and 66% of independents. However, Republicans' approval of the Obama administration on this issue is far higher than the 28% who approve of the president more generally.

While swine flu to date has affected residents of New York, California, and Texas the most, there are few regional differences in approval of the administration on the outbreak. Americans in the East (69%), West (68%), and South (67%) are equally as likely to approve of the administration's handling of the situation, while those in the Midwest, the region least affected at this point, express slightly lower approval (61%).

A Spotty Response to the Flu Threat

snip//

The causes of the delays are not yet clear, but the United States itself may have fumbled at the start. The first two cases of the new illness in this country were detected in late March in Southern California. Special diagnostic tests being tested in the state showed them to be an unusual influenza strain. But it was not until April 17 that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified the cause as a novel swine flu virus. Officials will need to explain why it took so long and whether such gaps can be reduced in the future.

snip//

Once the alarm had been sounded, the response in this country was vigorous, thanks to advanced planning and stockpiling of medicines and equipment during the Bush administration:eyes:. The federal government, which had 50 million treatments of antiviral drugs, distributed a fourth of that to states and localities, many of which had created federally subsidized stockpiles. If anything, this enormous array of antiviral medications and other medical supplies was overkill given the relatively small number of cases and the mildness of the disease so far in this country. But it was reassuring evidence that a defense could be mounted against a nastier virus.

4. Aye!
But it is better not to pretend otherwise!

I'll be glad when our President finds the time to get something done about this media,
as well, election reform. I know that it is coming....but I'm hoping that it will be
sooner than later.

8. Which was advocated by the then SENATOR Obama...
They never give him credit. Progressives and Lefties do the same...they always take credit for adding pressure when there's no evidence to say he would never have done something from the beginning. I guess he realized when running and winning that he'll rarely take any credit. We had that twit Mika Mouse on Cup of Joe Schmoe say that it was pure "luck" that he was able to save the Capt from the pirates. ~sigh~

6. Auturo Sarukhan
The Mexican Ambassador to the US had glowing things to say about the way the Obama administration was handling this situation when he was interviewed on CNN the other day.
