PHOTO No shit, here comes the President

A military usher approaches a guest as she changes a baby's diaper on a settee in the Cross Hall of the White House beneath a portrait of former President Jimmy Carter to suggest an alternative location, before the arrival of President Barack Obama for the ceremonial swearing in of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Friday, May 1, 2009, in Washington.

47. wow. just wow.
My theory of child raising has always been that...

If the kid can actually verbalize the phrase...

"I just made poo-poo."

He/she'd better be talking about a poo in a potty.

That's just really lax parenting skills unless the kid is learning challenged in some way.

51. I mean the 5 yr can go to the bathroom by himself with no prob.
The three yr olds just poo and piss in there diapers as they wish (once in a while they do go to the toilet on their own). They didn't seem learning challenged, they are very smart but very spoiled.

Aye, after week there, I promise to be the best mother I can be, I would hate to have spoiled brats.

54. On two separate occassions at our house with two different 5 yr old kids
Edited on Sat May-02-09 12:03 PM by The Hope Mobile
we were told by the kids to wipe their butts while they were sitting on the toilet. Are you kidding me??? I laughed and said "I don't think so. Wipe your own butt". That takes nerve and I honestly can't understand the "parenting" involved there. I wouldn't send my kid to someone else's house unless they were able to wipe their own bottom. Babies are different but COME ON!!!

As to the location of diaper changing, in public at the White House is not the place because its disrespectful. . . BUT, in your own house, you should be able to do it anywhere you want to. Not a parenting issue.

PS The way diapers are now, its not at all necessary to get any "waste" on anything but the inside of the diaper. Not a sanitary issue either.

43. I hear ya. Seems to be the in thing now, letting kids stay in diapers for years and years
I know preschool teachers surprised to learn parents will send kids to 'school' who are not potty trained.

Many parents think kids will train themselves but keep kids so busy (and comfy in disposables that keep kids feeling dry when they pee) that they do not have a chance to feel the need to change behavior as they grow.

Have seen WAY too many 4 and 5 year olds in diapers, parents making excuses for not parenting. And some of those parents are well aware of how corporations try to manipulate consumers into buying products they don't need, but they still spend a fortune on diapers for kids who should be out of them.

And yeah, I will get flamed too, cuz THAT is so much easier than taking two weeks out of busy life to help nurture offspring to learn behaviors which will allow offspring to function beyond infancy.

Pissing in your pants is SUPPOSED to feel uncomfortable.

48. At a point, kids should be uncomfortable pissing in their pants
Edited on Sat May-02-09 10:30 AM by havocmom
Without discomfort, most people will not change a behavior and go on to learn wonderful things.

We are not talking infants so young they don't have the physical ability yet to control bowels and bladder. :eyes:

I do notice some disposable diaper makers now make them with surfaces so the kids DO feel uncomfortable when wet, in the larger size range. Gee, ya think they might have a reason for that?

49. Actually a great way to "train" kids is to just let them go bare.
This has to be at home of course...

but there is generally no more than one or two "accidents."

They can catch on real quick under the right circumstances.

Over the course of a weekend with both of mine.

Also you have to remember to frequently ask if there is a potty need when out and about.

Because when a 2-3 year old tells you they gotta go?

It is an IMMINENT event.

50. Yep. Thinking it is the 'stay at home and frequently ask if they need to potty' is the real problem
Too many people having kids but not wanting to do the time/effort to parent. Too much thinking kids (feral, self absorbed critters by nature) will train, educate, raise, socialize themselves by magic or something.

First year my cousin taught kindergarten, she came home and cried every day for a couple months. Said it was like the kids had been kept in closets until it was time to take them out, dust them off, pack them off to school. She was tough too. Taught jr hi in inner city Kansas City in the 60s prior to the 'break' she took for kindergarten, in a upper middle class school in California. Boy, what a shock she got!

two weeks out of busy life to help nurture offspring

I love these type of blanket statements. It took us 11 MONTHS to get my daughter to use the potty. I was about to go on Craig's List and HIRE someone to teach her how to use the potty when she just up and decided out of nowhere to start doing it.

Every single child is different. I have a friend that has three children. Her first child took 1 month to potty train; second one a YEAR; 3rd one is still working things out after 6 months.

Every single child is different.

I don't think Obama would have cared. He would have understood what was happening.

She was only trying to care for her baby. No one would fault her for that. I understand what the military guard was trying to do, but I truly don't think Obama would have cared that much...he probably would have gone over and admired her little kid...

44. And if that's a boy baby it makes no difference
My little guy managed to get me right in the face a time or two when I was changing his diaper. After changing diapers on two babies myself for years, I know unwelcome surprises can and do happen in the process. I sure wouldn't want to be surprised changing my child on an antique in the White House. Really, is the public restroom just too far away?

I'll just say, after working in retail for 30+ years, there's always a few parents who are mind-blowingly ignorant and inconsiderate when it comes to respecting furniture. Not just the diaper changers (and sometimes diaper leavers -- trash too far away, too, I guess), but the ones who let their kids run around with food and/or drink.

That usher has the same frozen smile we used to to sport while cluing in the clueless, all the time thinking to ourselves :wtf:

Like I said, it's a pet peeve. :-)

Working at San Francisco Airport, where there are changing tables in both the men's and women's restrooms, I'm always stunned by how many people lay their kids on the carpet in the middle of the boarding area and just go for it. WTF is wrong with these parents? I understand you have to put etiquette aside sometimes for your children's needs, but that action is just clueless and self-absorbed.

However, there is a HUGE dif between changing a dipe in a loaded boarding area and doing it in the freakin' White House. I can't believe she had to be told to stop that nonsense in the People's House!

I'm not seeing diaper changing. It looks like a piece of paper in the woman's hand. Maybe her invitation, or a program?

Who knows who captioned this photo, but you can bet that if this really were a diaper change in public on a historic piece of White House furniture that the right wing screech machine would be cranking it up to somehow blame Obama.
