4. Also on NPR. 6 minutes ago. Link:
NPR.org, April 30, 2009 · NPR has learned that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is planning to retire at the end of the court's current term.

The court has completed hearing oral arguments for the year and will be issuing rulings and opinions until the end of June.

Souter is expected to remain on the bench until a successor has been chosen and confirmed, which may or may not be accomplished before the court reconvenes in October.

6. We need Scalia, Roberts, Alito, Kennedy, Thomas to retire . . .
in fact, they should retire not only from the SC but from any notions of

participating in concepts of justice!

27. Well then, I guess then he only has 32 more to go.
But at age 60, he might be sitting on the court for a while yet too.

At a minimum, Obama is going to end up replacing Stevens. Stevens is 89 years old. Ginsburg is 76, Scalia 73, Kennedy 72, and Breyer is 70. It is entirely possible Obama will need to replace a few of them too.

29. Didn't realize that Scalia was 73 and Kennedy 72--!!! Gingsburg has also been ill.
Breyer 70! An aged court!

Rather good news!

sorry had to ask you for a hint --- wasn't familiar with her --

when I put her name into search, nothing like that came up!

So Sen. Ben Nelson is one of the problems . . . and because she represented NARAL!

Looks like there may be a bit of a reversal, but that still leaves anti-choice

Repugs ....

Update: Nelson still may vote Yes on cloture, his spokesperson tells me. One key question is which way Nelson will vote on the initial cloture vote to bring the nomination to the floor. This requires 60 supporters, which makes it the real hurdle, while the final vote is a simple majority one. Senators will sometimes vote Yes on the first, harder vote and then vote No later, to be on record as a No.

So I asked Nelson’s spokesperson whether this also meant he was leaning towards a No vote on cloture. His response: “He hasn’t decided yet, but he usually votes for cloture, as he is against obstruction and believes it is important for each issue to get an up or down vote.”

So this isn’t quite as bad for Johnsen, but Nelson is still validating the criticisms, and could vote No on cloture, too.

24. Just reading that he's now considered the most LIBERAL of the SC justices . . .!!!!

He was born in '39 -- making him 70 this year --And he was appointed by Bush in 1990!

Almost 20 years on the court --

and by the way that would seem sufficient to me --

I don't think there should be an age limit either way, but how about a term limit for them?

Maybe it's a bad idea? It would have created earlier opportunities for the Repugs to put

conservatives on the court?

No doubt tho that the Court should be televised . . . . .

Currently, SEVEN of the nine justices were appointed by Repug presidents --- !!!

The other two by Clinton --- Breyer and Ginsberg --
