Favorite Line of the Night: "They're literally eating themselves alive."
This was by Gov. Ed Rendell from Pennsylvania on Rachel Maddow's show tonight in regards to the Republican faction basically destroying themselves by catering solely to the base and just being stupid. :D

1. Them eating themselves alive is eating me alive. I'm so depressed with all this
story of torture and the GOP using jackboot tactics to attack Obama. I'm just so sick of them I wish they would shut up and go away rather than running the perpetual "base" campaign. You cannot watch them eating themselves alive without being diminished yourself. I hate them.

6. I think the denial followed by rationalizations of torture put me over the edge.
I feel like laughing and crying at the same time. The only thing I know for sure is that this cannot stand. President Obama needs to put America back on course. The only way between here and there is through a proper investigation and prosecution. I look forward to them being made to shut their pie holes.

8. That's exactly how I felt when I was watching the vids in the PV section.
I only respected Shep Smith after wards who I think feels the EXACT same way we do. He hates it and he's in a den of fools who are rationalizing and apologizing for all of this before there's even a prosecution. I think they're scrambling now but this shit hit them hard and they're pointing fingers to people like NP...thank God NP went on tv and said FLAT OUT---HELL NO!!

11. Smith always had a conscience
Go look for his reporting on Katrina. I was on the second or third day and Asshannity was trying to politicize it, say it wasn't that bad and Smith called him out. Of course Asshannity was in NYC and Shep was outside the Superdome.

12. I'm a mess watching this unfold.
I think I've been hanging on to it, holding it close for too long. And it's all spilling out with every memo, every photograph, every interview with people now free to speak. It was worse than I imagined, more insidious, more widespread. I am so ashamed as an American and I just don't understand how this could happen in this country unchecked.

Check this out: AG Holder: "And you will be proud of your country." Cheers.

16. It's 8 years of blindness and complacency with outright lies and secrecy.
When you combine all those...a lot can happen and we as citizens can't allow another government to do that again. EVER.

25. I'm just grateful that it's all coming out now. FINALLY. Took long enough.
This thing is really taking on a life of its own. And that's good. We NEED to wallow in this. We NEED to do whatever will finally get us all in touch with how frickin' hideous it is. How it betrays EVERYTHING we say we are as Americans. WHAT moral high ground? What moral imperative? Because I will NOT go to my grave with the scarlet letters on me that spell out "torturer." That's what these bastards and their apologists are trying to stick on us by refusing to face the truth. We ARE torturers as long as this shit is allowed to stand unchallenged, uninvestigated, unprosecuted.

Perhaps it is, after all, true that the more of this moral effluence is allowed to ooze out into the open, the more painfully obvious it will be - just what we as a nation will finally be forced to do about it. It'll just stink too badly to try to ignore - or "move forward" away from, any longer. As more of this nightmare sees the light of day, I'd be interested to watch how many "r's" finally rediscover their consciences and finally decide that enough is way too much. I can't believe they ALL will remain in lockstep about this. The momentum of public opinion may eventually force some of them to back away from their embrace of - well - their torturer friends and heroes.

30. IMO this is where rubber meets the road with the Obama Admin.
I'd be hard pressed to believe he is going to let this slide. That would go against the core morality of America as a whole. In my mind there can no equivocation about prosecution, and I will never be the same again if this is allowed to stand.

4. It's true. They are so overwhelmed with Obama, the economy, the polls, the
foreign affair events, and everything, that they don't know what to do.

They're like drowning men who can't swin, flailing about trying to grasp at anything and everything.

13. What has shifted "the middle"?
These Neo-con knuckledraggers acted stupid and catered to their base for 8 years---and it worked!
No matter how ludicrous their pronouncements, no matter how transparent their rationalizations, all they had to do was say it, repeat it ad nauseum, and it became TRUTH. Things were the way said they were BECAUSE they said that's the way they were. They were questioned only by surrender monkeys who hated America. But, no longer.
I don't think Obama is reponsible for this shift. I think the shift is responsible for Obama.
Did the Bush house of cards just collapse under the weight of all that arrogance and lawlessness?
Something caused the independent middle to call "Bullshit!" and they're not buying anything with a GOP label anymore.

14. "It's the economy, stupid"
it's a cliche we have all heard over and over - but it woke up America.
Suddenly people are looking for the cause of why people are losing jobs left and right -- and the entire eight years of Bush is being analyzed like no other time in history. This new perspective is not looking good for the Neocons or the GOP.

23. "I don't think Obama is reponsible for this shift. I think the shift is responsible for Obama."
That's about right- Obama was in the right place, at the right time- and then had the right demeanor when it all came crashing down.

The worm turned with Katrina- but it took the financial meltdown to really drive the message home that Republicans failed at everything they did- and screwed up everything they touched.

and that's a nitpick, as you're essentially correct in other particulars, but I think the failure to find the WMDs in Iraq was the beginning of the end.

Unless they are engaged in actual, not metaphorical, cannibalism.

Actually I just heard him say it on the Rachel Maddow 2AM rerun. The quote is "They're literally destroying themselves; they're eating themselves alive." Either way, he's guilty. You were just following orders. ;)

32. We truly need to own that our country is what it is this time
Years ago when Vietnam became our bleeding wound we almost owned that we were wrong to go to that war and that our government was WRONG. Then along came Reagan and wrapped it all up in uber-patriotic jingoistic propaganda and those who today are torture apologists refused to grow up. Reagan kept this country's average mentality stuck in adolescence from then till now. We have a chance again to own our mistakes and to learn from them and evolve. Other countries have done it. The Colonial countries have all grown up, Germany grew up after WW II. Hell the separate European countries have come together as the European Union and are developing it as they go.

I want my country to grow up. I want Americans to be adults. Responsible and accountable for what we do.
