A storm is brewing. A really big storm.
Edited on Tue Apr-21-09 06:23 PM by cali
The wrath of Washington is about to come down on Obama's head in an overwhelming way. It's already started. And the media is going to lead the charge. It already is.

Simply by leaving the door open for prosecution, Obama has opened the door for those who have a lot to lose and for those dedicated to destroying him.

He'll be accused of putting American lives at risk. He already has been. It'll get worse and more shrill. They're out to kill this however they can.

He'll be accused of being weak. He already is being accused of it.

Everything you can imagine is going to be thrown at him.

Get ready for it. And get ready to support him. Because we need to support him when he's right even more vigorously than we do when we think he's in the wrong.

3. Cheney is running scared
Notice how GWB is keeping a low profile and Cheney is out there building his defense. Cheney with the what - 19% approval rating when he left office?

This will be bad for the GOP. As Chris Matthews said tonight - the GOP is becoming known as the no-taxes and torture party.

38. Scared as hell
What I think is Cheney was responsible for the torture, sure Bush was president, but he pretty much did what Cheney told him, and I think Bush has covered his ass on this, but Cheney had his hands all over the torture thing, and he is trying to do what he does best, lie, lie, lie, and hope nobody investigates! Bush is keeping his mouth shut, but Cheney is making it worse for him by going after Obama!

84. Cheney wants them to cherry-pick a tiny morsel of the many, many
"confessions" and "statements" they got (mostly nonsense), which he carefully inserted into a CYA memo to justify the torture before he left office. If they release any information at all, they should release all of it so that the American people can see how much work goes into not only the horror of the torture but also the fact-checking to see which "confessions" and "statements" are true and which are not.

Even without torture, sensational cases sometimes get insane people who come forward with tips about who done it or even false confessions. It is a waste of time. Much more information is obtained by quietly listening to a person and asking quiet questions.

It isn't just whether you get a bit of truth out of a tortured suspect, it is also whether, considering the barbarity of the acts that the torturer has to do and the pain and suffering of the victim of the torture, the torture is worthwhile. To put it in crass terms, you have to do a cost-benefit analysis. The problem with torture is that, unless, as the terrorists did with Richard Pearl, you are going to kill your victim in the end anyway, the cost -- the actual financial cost of of sifting through the junk that is obtained and the cost in terms of embarrassment when your heinous acts make headlines and then the cost to the personal lives of those who do the torturing, it just does not pay. It is a crime. And the old adage that crime does not pay is true.

100. They (the media ass-covering shills) keep saying it was "only" waterboarding.
Does anyone really believe that we weren't also doing the really serious shit? If they're willing to admit to naked piles and getting locked in coffins with scorpions (okay, "insects," but who are we kidding?), then what else was REALLY going on? Fingernail pulling? Beatings with 2x4's? Smashing hands with hammers (did you see 'Body of Lies'?)? Come on, does anyone really believe that when we got these people into secret interrogation centers with no one watching that we just tried to scare 'em a little? Get real.

Cheney is a beast. He is the worst kind of human...a pussy himself who advocates the most atrocious behavior towards others.

Obama has to prove 2000 and 2002 elections were stolen. Obama has get "patriotic" and fight for our "freedoms". ...Too may people feel that torturing people who would "chop off your head", isn't such a bad thing.

113. Cheney thinks he's so damn smart
He can say "we got a lot of valuable information from certain "techniques" and it saved American lives"

When someone asks him "What information?"

Its the same "I can't tell you or it would jeopardize national security".

We all know they got squat from the hours upon hours of inhumane, degrading, unconstitutional, violations on other human beings. Some just picked up off the field by War Lord minions and sold for a reward to American troops, whether they were simply farmers, or taxi drivers.

Because you damn well know that Cheney would have cock-a-doodled loud and long about some foiled plot and trotted out the conspirators before the MSM, so he and the chimp could parade around behind them, with their feathers all preened and shiny.

Maybe if they call him enough names, they think, he will feel intimidated and stop.

I think they have a surprise coming. This is not a president who will easily bullied.

:hi:

I noticed something this morning as I readied for work to the harsh tones of the morning news. They were talking about Obama... doesn't really matter what the issue is because they all treat it exactly the same way. The shocker to me was that after all the video was run showing Pubbies bashing Obama and all the lies, the talking head actually said a few words to set them all straight! Not that too many noticed, I'm sure.

The lies, the blatant sick, twisted lies are what really piss me off.

You're right about the storm, and I think this last go-round with nay-sayers shows how easily and quickly some of us are to jump on the Obama bashing bandwagon. That instant society thing.

Batten down those hatches!

I've already heard people who voted for Obama claiming they're sorry they voted for him because they believe the lies about the taxes and the budget. Normally I would have thought these people were full of crap, but they were openly vocal about supporting him for a while.

56. As they lose the spin Battle there are fewer options left.
With assholes like Beck and Fox news encouraging sedition the GOP has almost adopted a battle that has never worked in American history. Cheney is trying to revive the old fear card (which no longer works) and has now managed to awaken the proverbial sleeping giant, when he could have walked.

No matter what happens the next attack on the American people and the American Government will be investigated. It now looks like that past crimes are now on the table again.

57. How quickly we forget. Establishment Washington has blood on its hands. A LOT of blood.
And the vested criminal oligarchy is comprised of more than a handful of its most visible lobbyists and any representatives in Congress who ever went to jail.

This, for example, was written at the height of the attempted take down over Rev Wright, but I don't know if the most arrogant corporatist media can be trusted to have ultimately changed their stripes all that permanently, since.

"Better buckle up. Obama has entered the crosshairs of America's criminal oligarchy and things are bound to get nasty."

(...)

America has blood on its hands. America, as Martin Luther King said, "is the greatest perpetrator of violence in the world today." So what else is new?

The media use every soapbox in the country to preach uber-nationalism and vilify America's critics as unpatriotic. That's why the wrath of the media has descended on Obama like a Texas hailstorm; they're afraid he doesn't understand who really runs things in America.

Wright means nothing to the media or to the men behind the curtain. If he didn't provide an avenue for denigrating Obama, he'd be treated with the same indifference as the thousands of other blacks who were herded at gunpoint into the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina. Better buckle up. Obama has entered the crosshairs of America's criminal oligarchy and things are bound to get nasty.

Perhaps they'll focus on the justice department even more. This will go to a special prosecutor.

There will also be multiple attempts to undermine the prosecution.

As Candidate Obama, he spoke forcefully and strong, and it worked - remember the Rev. Wright insanity, and how it evaporated when Obama got out in front of it?

President Obama has been weak, very weak. Passing the buck on war crimes prosecution to his AG, when the evidence is clear as day? Absurd.

Obama needs to do the right thing, and do it clearly and strongly. He needs to get out in front of America and regain the moral authority he had as a candidate. He needs to take personal responsibility, as he urges us all to do.

97. The arguments against torture are easy & simple & powerful, once understood
Of course, that doesn't mean that they will be articulated or presented in that fashion in the media, or by spokespersons. Sigh.

Torture/inhuman and degrading treatment: NO EXCEPTIONS not in time of war, not ever. Don't need a treaty to make it binding, it is a "jus cogens" norm of international law. See Nuremberg. Orders don't matter in the sense of being an excuse.

if the touchstones of the Obama administration are transparency AND the rule of law, as he said, his hands are appropriately tied. He'e executing the law.

I still have HOPE btw. It first flickered into existence when I listened to Senator Obama give that magical keynote speech at the DNC during the '04 election cycle. It grew stronger when Senator Obama announced that he would have a run at the Presidency, then during his run it turned into something stronger than HOPE- YES WE CAN! ....and then YES WE DID!

Lately, with all the Obama bashing around here, some perhaps deserved, some not deserved (and some freeper inspired), that flame of HOPE dimmed for me.

OP's and posts in the DU like those found here help re-bolster that HOPE!

My best thoughts, vibes, wishes and a worlds HOPE are behind Barack Obama. Our President has my support. Go Get 'Em Tiger!

134. The WH has set up AG Eric Holder to take the heat. He is the one who needs to stay out
of private planes.

Holder keeps rising in my estimation, and if he appoints a special prosecutor, he will be my new hero.

139. your local talk radio station does the groundwork
that's where to get obama's back- call complain boycott and picket the local talk radio stations and their local sponsors when they lie about and threaten obama and they do it all day every day

many local sponsors are just trying to get on the biggest stations in the state and often are not aware what is being said in their names by a pack of loudmouths who have been wrong about everything but happen to sit on the biggest soapbox in the country, usually protected from real calls by call screeners

it's not true in my state. There's just not much of an appetite for conservative radio in VT.

146. VT is lucky
the RW talk radio monopoly dominates politics in many red states (with lots of senators) and pushes limbaugh (blue dog) dems around.

one local blowhard on a megastation reading chamber of commerce and GOP talking points can undo the work of thousands of citizens volunteering a few hours and dollars here and there. those stations are GOP political powerhouses- ignoring it has been a disaster for all americans- we wouldn't be in this pile of shit.

144. Apparently RW talk radio here is framing it all in terms of that dumb show "24"
Edited on Wed Apr-22-09 07:23 PM by Reterr
I really wonder just how delusional RW nuts are sometimes. A coworker was telling me that a local moran phrases it entirely in terms of that Jack Barr character and some idiotic scenario involving a "nucular" attack and 2 minutes to save the world blah blah.

I just don't get it. Do Freepers actually believe that "24" is a documentary series? Every other time I hear a wingnut address this issue, they drag that show into it. Is this all they have? A b-grade tv show with bizarre plots?

147. If Holder goes through with this, and the dirty details come out...
...they'll be spending so much time covering their own asses that they won't have time to take shots at Obama.

151. I'm not worried about rightwing verbal shots
The kind of shots I fear come from hired guns. Maybe you had to live it, but I came of age with JFK, RFK and MLK. They will stop at nothing.

As the posse closes in on Cheney, * and their merry gang of viscious thugs, it could get very, very ugly.

It's no longer egos, bank accounts and imagined legacies at stake. If Obama is *truly* leaving the door open to war crimes prosecution for those who ordered it, then their lives are at stake.

In that case, they won't stop at character assassination. I just hope the security around the Obamas, the Holders, and the potential witnesses stays very tight.

And looking at the past few weeks, it's starting to look like President Obama has got them surrounded. I'm beginning to think even Holder's announcement of wanting to lower pot limits was a game intended to arouse the passions of the ever-widening base. Got people up in arms -- we're going to jail kids for having a couple joints and let torturers and murderers walk? And then Obama releases the memos, and even more people are incensed. So Obama rallies the people around torture.

150. Last night we had a visitor
a staunch Republican. I have never seen so much venom and hate in a person. She said the Repubs are getting ready to take the country back, by force is necessary. I found it unbelievable that she believes all the lies - it felt as if I was in the Twilight zone.
