I always understood that Abraham Lincoln and FDR were among the greatest Presidents in United States histroy. However, listening to Republican rhetoric, it appears that these truisms are being challenged.
First, in response to Obama's plans, there has been a concerted effort by Republicans to argue that FDR either caused the Great Depression (temporarlly impossible) or prolonged it by increasing spending when the Great Depression was actually ended by the stimulative effect of greatly increased spending associated with World War II (contraditory, I know).
Second, we have Texans pushing the idea that states can secede as a matter of right if they oppose the policies of a President. It would have been nice if they told Californians and new Yorkers this during the Bush years. Also, if this is the case, isn't one of the central premises behind the Civil War, that it is illegal to secede, wrong? If only President Lincoln had the counsel of Governor Perry!
I can hardly wait for the next bit of Republican revisionist history.
