Obama announces forum of major economies on climate change
@ 3:58 pm by Michael O'Brien

President Obama announced Saturday a major conference on energy and climate change to be held in Italy this July with a preparatory session in Washington in late April.

Obama debuted the "Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate," an effort among countries to generate some consensus before climate change negotiations to be held in December and hosted by the United Nations.

The State Department will host the leaders of 16 countries and the leader of the United Nations in a preparatory session in late April, the White House announced.

The participating countries include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The United Nations and Denmark, host of the December negotiations on climate change, will also participate.

especially if everyone who participates realizes this, too.

I hope Al Gore is happy about this.

2. Just What We Need - Another Forum To Tell Us What We Already Know
Just another forum for more bloviating and hot air dispersion.

having to do with improved energy ideas or climate change? iirc, all he wanted to do was profit from, destroy or ignore both. So yes, this is different.

7. You Miss The Point Entirely - The Ruling Class Uses Forums, Studies, Debates
As distractions for doing and accomplishing nothing.

In other words they pretend to care and then all the good will and energy generated by these events is lost to history and then antiquity.

I doubt that anything serious will transpire because of the Forum.

Oh sure, lots of good press and bloviating will be heard on the tubes and in print but that will be about it.

This phenomena can be observed from the smallest town hall meeting to the most powerful halls of government and business.

Watch it end and then hit reset.

8. Sometimes true, sometimes not so much...
I have personally sat on councils, been to forums, conducted studies etc... where substantive debate resulted in direct policy change.

I agree with you - like you, I have seen forums lead to changes - but I have NEVER seen people speaking of ruling classes, elites and powers that be EVER change anything.

in pushing for things to happen. I agree with Babylonsister - and I doubt you are significantly older than I am.

13. You prefer doing nothing?
Why do you think this will be telling us what we already know. I would expect that they will START at that point and socialize ideas of what we can do. Unlike you, I don't think that what we have to do is completely known - though if it was, it would still have to be sold.

For Copenhagen to result in anything, we need serious solutions - and simply saying cut n% is not a complete plan.

12. Isn't that just ducky. Robert Parry hit this nail on the head...
snip//

The logical result of a fading MSM – combined with a robust right-wing news media and a miniscule progressive one – will be the relative strengthening of conservatives who already possess a vertically integrated media infrastructure for developing and disseminating information, from newspapers, magazines and books to radio, TV and the Internet.

Even now, we see the impact of this right-wing media on the budget debate over key issues such as national health care and a “green” economy. Though the Republicans are in a distinct minority and seem to have few constructive ideas, they are, in many ways, driving the debate by popularizing the notion that Obama is a socialist out to bankrupt the country.

don't realize that OBama needs extra help in support, not another side nipping at him....due to the strenght of the conservative media and their 2nd cousins, the corporate media.
