EU Ambassador Says Europe Willing To Send More Troops To Afghanistan
Posted by Brian Montopoli | Comment On This Post

(CBS)On CBSNews.com’s “Washington Unplugged” today, European Union Ambassador to the United States John Bruton, the Former Irish Prime Minister, said that Europe may send additional troops to Afghanistan.

Bruton’s comment comes on the heels of President Obama’s announcement Friday morning that he is sending 4,000 more U.S. troops into Afghanistan on top of the 17,000 additional forces he has already announced he is deploying.

It also comes amid reports that an Afghan National Army soldier today killed two NATO troops and then himself.

“There may be some additional troops for some purposes,” Bruton said. “Particularly training was mentioned by President Obama , and I’ve no doubt that we would be willing to provide training for the Afghan army and the Afghan police. The development of the Afghan police is very, very important.”

Bruton also discussed the differences between the Obama administration and that of Mr. Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush.

“Well, I think there’s a willingness to confront unpleasant facts that’s notable in this administration,” he said. “I was particularly heartened, for example, by what Secretary of State Clinton had to say in the last two days about the extent to which consumption of drugs by Americans – and she could have said Europeans, as well – is contributing to the problems of law and order in Mexico.”

1. This is amazing!
Obama's departure from the Bush years appears to be more bold to those overseas.

3. Interesting comments from Ambassador Burton.
Afghanistan may prove even harder to control than Iraq, as the Russians found out to their great detriment.
