42. As far as Glass-Stengal,
do you think it would not have been repealed if President Clinton had vetoed it? The bill passed in the Senate by a vote of 90-8. His veto would have been over ridden easily. Why pick fights with the Senate unless you have a chance to win?

46. That's a great point.
My post was not to blame Clinton or FDR or Kennedy etc. My only intention was to point out that the presidents that are thought of as great would probably not be so thoroughly loved if they were in office right now.

I love Bill Clinton. I was only 9 when he was elected the first time, but in 1996 I went with my aunt to see him speak in Downtown Chicago.

50. Do you think it would have had so much Democratic support if the Clinton economic
team had not been cheerleaders for it? Clinton and most of the Senators, Congressmen, financial experts, media etc bought the idea --- and they were all wrong.

I actually don't blame Clinton - Clinton and the Senators and Congressmen all took the advice of Rubin, Summers, Greenspan and others who were trusted experts on financial issues. At that point, these guys had a pretty good record on being right. In addition, from some comments, non-banks were already expanding expanding providing bank like services in addition to financial services and banks were skirting the edge of what was allowed. The argument that the 1930s distinction was no longer important was easy to sell in the heady days of the 1990s.

Two other factors - the Commodities Futures Act that opted not to regulate swaps and derivatives, also signed by Clinton and the Bush/Cox SEC decision to allow leveraging to ratios like 44 to 1 were

But they were wrong - in addition, the remaining regulation then in place gradually disappeared.

Thanks for pointing out the truth. It was inevitable, and Clinton's signing and just moving forward saved time and money, at least there's that. Clinton had his hands tied on a lot of issues. The Republican Congress saw to that.

Edited to say: This is why the GOP/Freepers are so freaked out! They know full well what they got away with when they held all the cards, and they are shitting little green bricks right now because they know it is within this president's power to do much the same thing.

And despite the continued lying of many GOP/Freepers, we'll gain even more Democrats in Congress come the next election.

Either you're accusing him of being in bed with Wall Street or you're not. If you are making that accusation in a forum that's supportive of Democrats and the Democratic party, then IMO you should produce your evidence. If you're not making that accusation, what exactly are you doing? Just dropping some bullshit insinuation? That would be an odd thing to do, if in fact you were supportive of Democrats and the Democratic party.

of those Democratic candidates and office-holders who are actively engaged in campaign finance reform.

In fact, i am calling for all office holders who have received campaign contributions from Tarp recipients from 12/1/08 forward to return those funds.

Will you support this initiative?

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/contriball.php?cycle=2008

Barack Obama
University of California $1,385,675
Goldman Sachs $980,945
Microsoft Corp $806,299
Harvard University $793,460
Google Inc $790,564

If so, you might have missed this bit of text:

The organizations themselves did not donate, rather the money came from the organization's PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates.

Does this mean Wall Street made no donations to Obama? Of course not. But to imply that there is a quid pro quo arrangement based on an aggregate total from everyone affiliated with an organization (this count would include Joe the Janitor and his family's contribution, not just the fatcats) is disingenuous.

You know what...maybe Obama should tie political action to campaign contributions. Then the UC system could get the props it deserves, being Obama's biggest contributor and all.

Check the contributions to the Obama Inaugural Celebration, including those of the bundlers.

After the 2007 payouts many Wall Street workers were told that things were not going to be so great in 2008 and a few months into 2009 they were told that things could get very bad -----but I can't back these words with evidence because it was told to me by people working in one of the big firms.

71. Yup.
Another day, another thread.

People like to stir the pot, even when it's empty.

67. ******************* STRANGE FRUIT *******************
Edited on Fri Mar-27-09 04:35 PM by Strange_Fruit
“Every person has the power to make others happy.

Some do it simply by entering a room --

others by leaving the room.

Some individuals leave trails of gloom;

others, trails of joy.

Some leave trails of hate and bitterness;

others, trails of love and harmony.

Some leave trails of cynicism and pessimism;

others trails of faith and optimism.

Some leave trails of criticism and resignation;

others trails of gratitude and hope.

What kind of trails do you leave?”

And why do some here leave trails of hate and bitterness? Once more:

"Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop."

90. What surprises me is that someone who posts about lynching is not banned.
Usually only homophobes are allowed to stick around for a while.

88. You post the same poem in every thread
No matter what the subject.
Its as if you don't realize the poem is about lynching.

Here. Now it is about you.

"Here is troll for the mods to pluck,
For the admins to tombstone. Good Lord! You suck,
For the threads to lock, Not witty. Not droll.
Here is a boring and stupid troll."

84. I don't think he's awful.
But I'm hoping he'll do as much good for the American working class as he is for working classes around the world.

I also now disagree with him regarding the Dollar; I think China has a point and that perhaps we do need a global currency. Let's do reform, do it properly, all the way.

That or we can keep the Dollar, but cherrypicking issues doesn't seem right. For offshoring yet against being progressive... assuming what China thinks is being progressive; I sure as heck don't know.

If anything, let's let the companies decide if jobs should come back. With the occasional media report that products and services have been badly bungled up due to offshored malarkey*, then bringing jobs back to those who were doing great jobs in the first place would be nice.

85. I realise this is a sarcastic post
Hooray for that! But his reframing and dismissiveness of the legalization of pot issue was frankly embarrasing and beneath his intellect. There is nothing wrong with pointing out when we disagree with him. He has done very well so far except for that one.

92. Er...nothing anybody's said was anywhere CLOSE to saying that.
People who've taken a critical stance towards some of the Administration's policies are not acting out of hatred of Obama(any more than his most passionate supporters EVER actually thought he was a "Messiah".

Get over yourself, denem.
