The world's most beautiful female politicians revealed (and surprise, surprise, there's not a British woman among them)

By Tom Worden
March 25, 2009

Britain's women MPs have taken a battering in a poll to find the world's most beautiful female politician.

Blonde Peruvian congresswoman Luciana Leon, 30, tops the light-hearted list - which also features Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton and Segolene Royal.

Beauties from 30 countries from Israel to Afghanistan and Angola to New Zealand have won votes in the online poll. But not a single UK politician has made the grade.

Peruvian lawyer Luciana Leon was voted the world's most beautiful female politician followed by fellow countrywoman Mercedes Araoz

Home secretary Jacqui Smith and former transport secretary Ruth Kelly may have been among Blair's Babes when the former prime minister took power in 1997.

But they fail to register in the internet survey for Spain's popular 20 Minutos newspaper.

A journalist on the paper said: 'I'm afraid Britain's female politicians do not have a great reputation for their beauty.

'But when you look at women politicians worldwide some of them really are very attractive.'

Hundreds of readers have emailed their opinions to the website - but not a single one has asked for a Brit to be added to the list.

U.S vice president elect Sarah Palin was voted 24th sexiest female politician while Former French presidential candidate Segolene Royal ranked 36th

First placed Ms Leon, a lawyer by profession, is Peru's youngest member of parliament.

This morning she was top of the list with 24,094 votes.
One reader described her as 'a beauty with the face of an angel,' and another as 'the eighth wonder of the world.'

In second place is fellow Peruvian Mercedes Araoz, 47, with 15,109 votes.

Former U.S vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, 44, is in 24th place with 3,173 votes.

Secretary of state Hillary Clinton, 61, is the oldest on the list. She is in 34th place with 2485 votes.

Former French presidential candidate Segolene Royal, 55, is in 36th place with 2377 votes.

German Julia Bonk, 22, is the youngest woman on the list. She was elected to the state parliament of Saxony aged just 18.

Afghan Malalai Joya, 30, is in 54th place with 1053 votes.

She was once described as the 'bravest woman in Afghanistan' for denouncing what she called warlords and war criminals in her country's parliament.

Spain has the most candidates with five women, while the USA and Mexico both have four.

U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was the oldest woman on the list while Afghan Malalai Joya came in at 54th place

It's in good fun. The poll does not insult these women. I'm a feminist and I have no problem with complimenting women if it's done with respect.

Heck, let them do one about the male politicians. I'm sure plenty of us would enjoy it too.

34. It's hypocrisy.
Some of the ones bashing me now are the same ones who couldn't stand Hillary during the primaries and didn't give a damn when she was genuinely trashed in sexist terms by the media. In some instances they even defended them. So, now they are so offended because a Spanish newspaper does a poll on beautiful world politicians? How many threads have I seen here about Michelle's good looks and Obama's too. I guess the outrage is that it's Hillary..........

45. Look, I spent months calling out the sexism in the media.
I know sexism when I see it. But I don't think that we should be so militant that we bash a lighthearted poll. They never said that these women were not qualified to hold their jobs or that they got them through their looks. If they had, I wouldn't have posted it. How many posts have I seen here about Michelle's attractiveness? I didn't hear a peep from one person calling it sexist. Is there a double standard here? Compliment one woman's looks, but don't dare to compliment another?

Judging someone based solely (or in part) on their looks is sexist and wrong. Simply recognizing beauty for the sake of beauty is reasonable and not sexist. Just one person's opinion.

I'm a woman and a feminist and I see nothing wrong in receiving compliments. These women ARE attractive, no one is saying that they got there through their looks or that they are not bright and capable.

Are we soooo PC that it's no longer appropriate to say that a woman is good looking? Well, darn, that makes for a boring life.

I'm a feminist and if anyone wants to put me down in a sexist manner I would reap their throat, but I have no problem with someone giving me a sincere compliment. It makes me feel good about myself. Keep telling your wife that she's beautiful, I'm sure that she appreciates it. She probably thinks that you are handsome too. We all think that the person we love is attractive, we see them beyond their facade.

Sometimes the left needs to get a sense of humor. Nothing wrong with some lighthearted poll in these difficult times. It may be silly, but I did get a kick of seeing Hil on the list.

i would never have put a list of hot women/men politiicans together, because its immaterial. however a lot of this "anger" i dont think would exist had it not been for hillary on this list. a lot of people here are taken this opportunity to lash out against their fav clintons.

i found the number of middle aged women on this list to be refreshing. really refreshing change. not to mention, hotness without gratuitous nudity.

194. No, it's not about male or female for me.
I dislike beauty contests of any type, but especially so in the context of politics. It seems a very blatant sort of dumbing-down.

I'd like for people to be encouraged to think of policies when they think of politicians, not looks.

I'm sure we can all agree that looks are not something that should be a criterion when electing politicians. I'm also sure no one would argue that they are nevertheless used as such. I'm not saying that attractive politicians don't deserve to hold the offices they do... but it's more than possible that some if not most do not. That they might have been selected over less-attractive challengers for no other reason than looks. It seems to me that exercises like these only reinforce this kind of superficiality.

Anyway like I said, I don't like beauty contests of any type. For men or women. For me, this is certainly not about Hillary.

176. Ashamedly, there's some truth to this.
From another Daily Fail article related to the OP: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1164890/Oh-Yes-Minister-Meet-women-voted-worlds-stunning-politicians-WOULD-Sir-Humphrey-say--.html

it includes this graphic of prominent female MPs - complete with very unflattering photos and would never be considered "bikini models" or "fashion models".

Of course there's probably the UK's most famous female politician:

Though we have had some actual topless models run for parliament: this one comes to mind...

And there was Sister X NunOfTheAbove... except this sister was a he.

But more important is their beauty inside. Take Glenda Jackson... I say her heart's in the right place (mostly).

Then there's my local constituency:

My choice (and former MP) (Sue Doughty):

vs the present incumbent (sadly of the wrong party) Anne Milton:

After living through Conservative hell in the 80's and early 90's, sorry Anne, no matter how nice you are or how hard you're working I just cannot vote for you. I think Anne's a good MP but she's a Tory and I can't bring myself to vote for her for that alone. And as for Sue - she definitely rocks!

Unfortunate as it may seem, looks do play a substantial part in how politicians are judged.

I remember, of all the ugly bastards, Limbaugh going on and on about how the country didn't want to see a woman age in the public eye. How men aged gracefully (yeah, just look at him. LOL!!) and how women became hags.

Same old sh** in most fields. Women are ALWAYS judged by their looks first and then by their job performance.

Edited on Wed Mar-25-09 04:00 PM by ShortnFiery
Suffice to say that if a man shows up for a job interview with visible eyeliner, it would not be considered "a plus" to many employers. That's not fair but it's a societal norm. Further, I'll admit my bias that if my daughter brought home a boy who wears eyeliner, that would be "a red flag." I'm sorry, perhaps someday it will be as acceptable as tattoos are now, but not yet.

126. No, it's nobody's fault and I'm sorry if I came off as glib. However, there still is a NORM that
men should not wear make-up ... well unless they are in the theater or on TV. If you wish to be nonconformist in this area, God Bless You. Sincerely, I will try to not judge men harshly who do wear make up. However, as a women, who even when she was young, didn't mess with much more than "a good lipstick" and some translucent powder for daily make-up, I don't understand WHY you men would want to take on that burden.

Again, I am not free of prejudice but I try to be flexible and change my perspective when it is unfair to good people. :hi:

121. Bad form? You introduced the topic of HC's looks,
not me. I don't think how she looks is relevant. I think the whole topic is bad form. But since you decided to bring it up, I have something to say about it.

Some older women can indeed be beautiful (I'd add Raquel Welch to the list, actually). But Hillary Clinton isn't one of them.

Your thesis was that Hillary Clinton was not attractive. So you went and found the least flattering photo taken of Hillary Clinton during the Primary season. (The same one that Drudge, WingNutDaily, NewsMex and others plastered on their sites!)

Strange thing is, we saw Hillary Clinton nearly once a week every week for two years: debates, speeches, public appearances, etc.

Have you EVER seen her look as that picture portrays her?

For all we know, she could have been sneezing, coughing or whatever. (It was winter in NH...)

170. Don't you think it's subjective?
I think she's attractive. Not hot or gorgeous, but she's attractive . . . beautiful in her own way. Beauty comes from personality, a person's essence, how they look at the world and act within it, their sense of humor. You posted a way bad picture of her, a bad pic can be found of anyone.

I know many wouldn't, but I'd take Pete Townshend over Brad Pitt any day. Of course I'd prefer a younger Pete, but hey, we all age. It's the eye of the beholder and all that.

You can say over and over that she isn't, but other people do find her beautiful and put her on this list.

197. usually when people talk about beauty,
they are talking about physical attractiveness. That doesn't mean that's all that's important. But when someone says HC is beautiful, I don't assume they mean to convey that she has a great sense of humor or projects inner peace.

I posted the bad pic just to be dramatic. lol, I know she doesn't always look like that.

It is not that the other pictures are airbrushed. She looked better day to day voting in the Senate in the past.

What is ridiculous is to try to evaluate the looks of a 60 yr old woman on a scale you use for people much younger. She has aged well and was reasonably pretty in college and as First Lady.
