The defenses of the Special Olympics remark here are like the Special Olympics

Obama said he is treated like a kid in the special olympics, which was true.

It is also a clear, 100% no-doubt-about-it gaffe. No public figure, let alone the President, uses the Special Olympics as a metaphor without criticism, no matter how apt.

The people contending it isn't a gaffe are treating Obama like he is in the Special Olympics.

Is that irony-squared?

But I do agree that it is a gaffe, but only because it has been treated as such. Gaffes are defined by the reaction, not the action. I think that those really outraged either see something I do not do, have their outrage meter set way too sensitive, or are looking to for a reason to drag Obama over the coals.

In my opinion, Special Olympics is the worst scam ever shoved on the physically and mentally challenged. Each year, the guilty able bodied get to make themselves feel good and helpful by imposing a challenge to compete in an arena that is meant for the most fit and the most able in our society..and imposed on the least able to compete in such sports related competitions. And it is viewed as a cardinal sin to actually express even the slightest disdain for this farce. In this mini olympic farce, those least able to compete are bused in the competition site with much fanfare and hoopla....and yep, a few (the least impaired) do get to feel like a champion, but the rest of the thousands and thousands that are forced into this and it is a horrid and cruel imposition which just makes them feel even more frustrated with their own physical and mental limitations. It is a torture to these folks...most of them children. Special olympics is is one of the most cruel and heartless schemes ever devised. And it is not at all for the benefit of the disabled.
