If you want my confidence and optimism then start acting on the robber barons who, like in the 20's and 30's, got us here. Madoff is the poster child for the greed and dishonesty that has honest, hard working folks on the ropes. There are many, many others. It has hit me today, like a ton of bricks, that I can't believe you, have confidence in you, if you allow these people to go unaccountable. This shithead, who has ruined many lives, is sitting in his penthouse negotiating a plea bargain.

Enough of this! Madoff and all of the other robbers have to be held accountable or it is you, President Obama, who will have no credibility with me.

I really think, in a subconscious way, the American People are watching the Madoff situation and thinking that there really will be no "change". If Obama would go after and nail the guy, there would be a real spike in confidence in this country.

Isn't that something the Attorney General should do and not the President.

3. Is Maddoff's sentence really up to Barack Obama?
Cause I didn't think so.

Isn't the President not really supposed to get involved in action undertaken by our judicial system...you know, that old "seperation of powers" thingie that's embedded somewhere in some official document?

And if it was, but President Obama exercised influence, would that be Obama being a bit of a Bush,
by politicizing a trial?

6. So, we will just sit back and let this guy go free or get a light sentence?
I think Obama could make a statement about this,,,at least. We the people should not be silent on it, that's for sure.

8. There is a big difference between "we the people" speaking out, and Obama.
I completely understand the emotions involved. Being Jewish, and knowing that Madoff (also Jewish) stole millions from charities that support holocaust survivors, I hope that he rots in the deepest darkest cell for the rest of his life. I hope he feels the weight of all his crimes on his soul every moment that he rots there.

But, as Frenchie said, Obama cannot politicize a trail. Remember the outrage when bush stuck his nose in the Schiavo case? Obama cannot cheapen the trial of Madoff to that level, nor reduce it to a political football.

5. Madoff is a distraction, not a symbol
He had nothing to do with the credit crisis, nor did he pretend to sell the financial instruments blowing up around us.

True he represents the crooked side of Wall street, but nothing he did has any relation to leveraged transactions by the biggest names in the investment world that is responsible for where we are today.

The MSM is using him as a convenient foil to distract from the Greenbergs and the Jack Welch's that are actually to blame.

7. Amazing that you would not see this man as a symbol. Amazing that
you would not see his cover as their cover. If they don't go after Madoff, they won't go after any of the others. Just my gut feeling.

11. Madoff should rot in jail, but this country's seriously fucked up if Obama can throw Madoff
in jail himself. I assume Obama believes in that whole separation of powers thing.

12. I am not talking about Obama taking over the role of the NY AG...
I am talking about him setting some leadership standards here. He does not have to mess with the specific case but I have not heard one word about how this country deals with these people. There has to be some sort of an accounting for this and I don't hear anyone talking about it. And, with Madoff living in luxury and these other folks getting billions of $ without any accountability, it seems, I am beginning to loose faith in Obama. I am really beginning to wonder if this is business as usual in a different package.

13. I think it's way too early to lose faith. But, I kinda agree with your general point.
Hell, at least Madoff's been charged. What about all the people who knew that the accounting of the toxic mortgages and asset-backed securities was a fraud to begin with? What about all the failures to disclose material information? What about all the cover-ups in the SEC?

The lack of prosecutions has been extremely disappointing. Hopefully we will see a lot more of them once things start to get sorted out.

to throw Madoff in jail!

Just what we need after 8 years of the Bush Cheney regime to bring back any faith in democracy!

:sarcasm:

You may state "it is you, President Obama, who will have no credibility with me."

But the question is, why should anyone have any faith in your credibility given your desire for a turn to fascism?

For all the "right" reasons, of course.

17. Scum like Madoff don't deserve any better than rapists or murderers.
What they do with weapons or threats, he did with an accounting trick--and he did it to far more people than most rapists or murderers. He deserves NO better than anything they get.

18. Lets see, the President of the Unied States
instructing a federal judege to convict and sentence Madoff. Belive there is some serious Constitutional issues, may as heavy as some that Bush perpetrated. The President of the United States has abolutly no legal standing to determine the outcome of a Madoff trial nor the sentence imposed upon conviction.

19. I'd throw his wife in jail too
she knew all along that what her husband was doing was criminal and helped him by putting his assets in her name.

I would seize her assets too and charge her as an accessory to the crime.
