Palin bucks pressure in Supreme Court appointment

SCRUTINY: Selection went against push from Alaska Family Council.

Gov. Sarah Palin on Wednesday picked an Anchorage judge to fill the latest vacancy on the Alaska Supreme Court despite efforts by a conservative Christian group to convince her to do otherwise.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Morgan Christen, on the bench since 2002, will be just the second woman named to the high court in the 50 years since statehood.

>snip<

The head of the Alaska Family Council -- a Christian pro-family, anti-abortion group -- on Wednesday sent an e-mail to thousands of people asking them to urge Palin to pick Smith, not Christen.

The governor's office received about 100 letters, e-mails and faxes from the public about the Supreme Court appointment, including some from the family council, Palin's spokeswoman, Sharon Leighow, said in an e-mail. That was not an unusual number, Leighow said.

Judge Christen was formerly a public interest environmental lawyer, and a board member of Planned Parenthood of Alaska..

Still.. first she ditches C-Pac, now this.. hmmm..

3. In other Anchorage news.. winner of "Alaska short stories 2009, Palin Division" is pretty funny...
.
.

From the Anchorage Press:

President Palin

Winner:

Golly, thanks for comin’ to our family values White House picnic. The macaroni and Jello salad is so Wasilla, which is almost on the Russian continent. Anyways, you’re helpin’ put families first by comin’ out today.

Before loadin’ up a hotdog, I’ll tell you about the inaugural balls. Gadzooks, Todd and I hadn’t partied like that since I got pregnant with Trig! And though I won’t be sellin’ Air Force One, I listed two inaugural gowns, a pair of glasses and my red pumps on eBay. Bid, baby, bid! It’s so great to watch America spend its way to recovery!

Since we’re, you know, all about family values here, I’ll introduce my family to ya. First, there’s grandbaby Tripp there, who you’ll remember from the last campaign. Next there’s McCain… then Hat Trick… then High Mark… then Cuervo, who Bristol’s holdin’ there. Abstinence is due next month. She’s Bristol’s last. (Remember that talk with God, Bristol?) Jeepers, we had to hang blue tarps in the presidential gallery there to keep peanut butter fingers off the fancy artwork, and we set mousetraps to keep Palin teenagers off Lincoln’s bed, but we’re just, you know, a normal family.

Could somebody pass the Cheezits…?

4. Reagan picked O'Connor
Not all of 'em use abortion as the only test.

I will give her credit for that

5. Why should it matter if the Judge is pro-choice?
It's not like she's going to rule on whether someone gets an abortion. Abortion is LEGAL. With several USSC challenges behind it.

7. It's un-Palin-like to piss off evangelicals..
.
.

Example-

When the large sports/hockey arena in Anchorage asked for $1 million dollars to repair a leaking roof (the arena which is designated as the "emergency shelter" for the city of Anchorage)..

She said NO.

At the same time, she offered a local evangelical mega-church $2 million dollars to help them build a soccer dome on their grounds.

This was a couple of years ago when oil was through the roof and the state of Alaska was rolling in dough --$$$

Due to community outrage, the church backed down, and she eventually caved in and forked over the money for the repairs.

In the process though, it made residents here question her priorities..

8. Maybe Palin is having second thoughts
All those evangelicals sure didn't help her secure the VP spot.

And if nothing else, she's ambitious.

12. Exactly.........
she can use this in a variety of ways, in 2012 she can point to this and say "See I work across party lines and with those who don't agree with my views".

16. Freepers are still defending their true wuv, Sawah.
It was either this woman or an Environmentalist freak, who would be hell bent on destroying any chances of Alaska becoming an energy producing state. Geez these were the best choices they could give to Sarah..that’s like saying “Who would you want to share an apartment with, OJ Simpson or Scott Peterson?” Sucks these were the only choices Alaska had to offer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Smith is more than an environmentalist, although that is where he made a name for himself, he is a radical leftist on par with Ayers.. it is odd this so called pro-life group promoted him considering he is very, very pro-abortion, with no question about it unlike Christen whose connection is very vague..
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Murkowski asked for additional names and was rebuffed-—it ended up being a large political embarrassment for him. The process is set by the Constitution...period.

PP was not advocating abortions when Christen was on the board. Reports are now surfacing that, from the additional information received by Palin, she discovered that Christen was primarily an advocate for adoption while on the PP board.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second why is this only in bloggers (until now)? This is big conservative news. Partly because it has been pretty thoroughly discredited. Check the links that have been posted on this thread for more information on this lame attempt at a hit job on Sarah.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She is strong on adoption. It is Smith who is very very pro abortion, in fact, he is even worse then that. Christian was the better choice, she may not be perfect, but considering the other choice available, she is the better pick

I think Sarah could do just about anything at this point and they would still love her. They just can't quit her.
