The Nation of Islam is holding its annual convention in Chicago in its first major gathering since the election of a black U.S. president.

Having Barack Obama in power has a special significance for the Chicago-based movement that has espoused black nationalism and has fought for black self-reliance and power.

Sunday's keynote address by Minister Louis Farrakhan will wrap up the two-day event in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont.

References to the Obamas at the convention range from a session for women called the 'Michelle Obama Effect' to a bazaar selling Obama memorabilia.

The Nation of Islam religion has embraced black nationalism since it was founded in the '30s but it also has moved to include other groups including Latinos and Asians.

The Southern Poverty Law Center says the Nation of Islam is a hate group. So I don't like to think of them talking about Obama at its annual convention.

Is Farrakhan the head of NOI?

The video of him on the NOI's website has him talking about how happy he is that Obama was elected. Sloppy transcription here, very short portion of his interview: "When you look at the fact that he has black, white, brown, red yellow muslim christian, jew, hindu, gay straight male female, ... he makes a oneness in his audience. The only time I ever saw this in a politician was bobby kennedy ... but never with a magnitude of barack obama. People who are born to do something, they just ascend."

Funny sort of statement from a hate group who hates Obama, eh?
