"I don't believe in homosexuality"
I am watching the Alexandra Pelosi film on HBO and this comment really struck me.

How can a person not believe in homosexuality?

It's like not believing in furniture. Or coffee. Or grass.

Do they not think homosexuals EXIST? They think they are just pretending to be homosexuals?

Good grief. I really can't wrap my brain around this statement.

The other thing that is really striking me about this film is that I see nothing but white faces. I guess these people all live in an all white world. But do they NEVER turn on the TV and see that America is far from 100% white?

Wow. I am so glad Obama won this election. :patriot:

2. that struck me too. Homosexuals and abortions have been around as long
as humans have.

women abort babies (or try to) and some humans prefer same sex partners since pre history

denial ain't just a river in Egypt I guess.

And I'm not quite sure I understand putting abortion and homosexuality together like this.

25. Sometimes when people say they "don't believe" in something it means they don't approve.
At least, that's they way it's used by some people I know. They might also say that they don't "believe in" murder.

that women abort babies. Babies cannot be aborted, since babies are human beings that are already born.

Homosexuals...why, they're like little pixies, you see!!! Leprechauns....ELVES, even!!!

They hang around a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow....and if you try to take their gold, why, they'll teach you their HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA!!!!

No, that's not it...They make TOYS, yes, that's it....and if you're good, they'll have a fat man bring them to you and leave them under a lighted tree at your house!!!

Perhaps they sneak into your room late at night, and leave money under your pillow after swiping that tooth that fell out??

I'd like to say I don't believe in idiots that say things like that, but unfortunately, they're all too obvious!

40. I felt sick after watching it last night, the racism was so blatant and the negative emotions..
For the first time I began feeling that that 2012 election wasn't going to be a walk in the park. These people aren't letting it go and all that hate and anger are going to lead to more sever attacks come the next election. They have 4 years to sit, stew and get organized and during that time they wont be watching as Obama fixes things and changes their mind, they will just turn their backs ignoring the world around them and plot for his downfall. That was what was scary to me.

Even the racism, they just said "yeah well this is the south, that how i was raise and we're not ready for a black man for president" He had no explanation as to why except the color of his skin. And he wasn't looking to be educated as to why that was wrong. He ended by saying if he had it his way women wouldn't be voting either...

And another one was pissed off that he couldn't be more racist, so much so he started crying. WTF?

59. well, look at how smart folks are treated in this country.
obama was 'elitist' because he was college educated. especially republicans look down on education. my feeling is that it has to do with their own inadequacies because they didn't get an education themselves. kind of like parents who don't want their kids to be smarter than they are. Now, I welcome my kids being smarter than me. I want them to succeed as far as they can go. to do what they want to do. If they know more than me, then that gives me the opportunity to lengthen my line.

When i was in school and I tood a self defense class, i believe it was, we had to read a book called zen in the art of something. There was a chapter about lengthening your line. Some people try to shorten someone else's line by bringing them down to their level. We see that a lot. But I loved the idea of lengthening your line.... bringing yourself up to the higher level instead, and beating someone else by being smarter and faster and increasing your own strength and ability. I know I am babbling, but that part of the book always stuck with me throughout my life, and when I think about how I am acting about something I ask myself if I am trying to shorten someone elses line, or lengthening my own.... bringing my game up to their level.

8. They don't believe in anything Mommy didn't tell them about by age five.
It's an attempt to cling to the innocence of youth. Like all those people who think music or life or whatever was better when they were young. "Things were so much simpler then." Of course they were simpler for YOU, Mommy and Daddy took care of everything. When you get older and realize there's a world they didn't tell you about, things get complicated.

So, homosexuality doesn't exist because Mommy and Daddy thought it was wrong. Evolution doesn't exist because Mommy and Daddy flunked biology. People didn't have sex out of wedlock because Mommy and Daddy said it was wrong. Crime and murder and child abuse didn't happen because Mommy and Daddy didn't let you overhear those discussions and kept you away from any victims of child abuse as if the victim was tainted and it was contageous so that your little mind wouldn't be frightened.

That's all nice and good and well-meant for Mommy and Daddy, but people grow up and deal with complexities. Conservatives just don't grow up.

What we need, and are slowly getting, is a generation raised to understand that homosexuality is natural, normal, and beautiful, rather than whatever bigots think it is now. Then in a generation even casual conservatives will accept it as normal because Mommy and Daddy were okay with it.

Until then, we just need American-loving legislators and judges to rule in favor of Constitutional equality and against discrimination and bigotry. That would be nice.

19. Why is everyone getting so pent up about semantics...
These are hardly the most educated people and their use of English, is at best, quite colloquial. They are using "I don't believe" as a proxy for "I don't agree with" or "I don't accept" or "I don't approve of..."

Have some of our fellow DUers really not spent any time around very poorly educated (not to mention highly bigoted) Americans? And, no, this is not just a Southern issue, though the South has a very large share of them.

Ignorance...

26. Speaking of semantics: umm, you used the phrase "pent up" incorrectly.
Someone is 'pent-up' when they're unable to express whatever emotion is being repressed.
So if someone is expressing their dislike for a certain phrase, their frustration is no longer 'pent up.'

Just sayin'...

45. Its a little more deeper than semantics unfortunately
I cant speak for all Christian traditions, however in the LDS Church they have flat out said to use the word same sex attraction over gay - because they do not believe people are gay period. I cant find the quota right now but they feel that using the word "gay" gives credence to homosexuality as an identity rather than a sin. A lot of Christian ex-gay groups believe the same.

49. I don't doubt that explains some out there...
no one here is likely to deny the amount of true bigots out there who believe homosexuality is a "choice" (and an "immoral" one at that)...

But, even "simpletons" can sometimes be more complex as a group. Sometimes ignorant misuse of language is "just" ignorant misuse of language

1975 - The First Presidency issues a letter referring to "the unfortunate problem of homosexuality which occurs from time to time among our people" which encourages leaders "not to label people as homosexual because this both discourages and tends to make the matter seem beyond solving."

1995 - ....."we should refrain from using these words as nouns to identify particular conditions or specific persons." ...

I'm pretty sure it eventually gets down into grocery stores in any number of cities.

Consumers can buy it, take it home, open it up, and drown a stack of flapjacks with it.

Love and maple syrup shine like
Embers warm, like thoughts divine
They tell us it is spring
Love and maple syrup stir
The thoughts of people into words
Of songs that they can sing

Looking for the world to be
Anything but what they see
Longing to be understood
By the heart that shapes the wood

34. "I don't believe in" is often used to mean "I don't agree with".
Probably in analogy with people saying "I believe/don't believe in Evolution". Idioms usually don't make sense.

39. I just watched that film too, i think it just means he believes that are choosing to be gay.
He doesn't believe it's an actual orientation or desire that you can be born with. Like so many on the religious right, all of them believe it's a sin, so of course they don't believe it's something your born with. In their eyes, children aren't born with Sin they choose to Sin.

50. Obviously they are no Mark Twains
When asked if he believed in infant baptism,
Mark Twain is said to have responded,

“Believe in it? Hell, I’ve seen it.”

54. the Ted Haggard documentary? that was really tragic
it was like watching a one man BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. The guy doesn't know how to deal with who he is in the context of the subculture he was born into, but he can't bring himself to step away from it, and essentially join the rest of America.

67. No he cant at all
And yes it is really sad. I saw him on Larry King a couple of weeks ago and he admitted that he has sexual thoughts about men but denies he is a homosexual, it must be miserable to be Ted Haggard.

58. It is NOT semantics; NOT "don't agree with". They mean what they say: They do not believe that
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 08:10 AM by WinkyDink
"homosexuality" is a legitimate category, if you will. To them, it is that, yes, one can certainly observe people with pink and green hair, tattoos, and/or piercings, but these are not natural states; they are not even Darwinian adaptations. They are CHOICES.

Similarly, they do not believe homosexuality is a natural state of being. It is, rather, an unfortunate affectation. So SNAP OUT OF IT!

It's what God would want.

65. "I really have a hard time getting my head around"
When watching the movie I wondered if some of those people were faking. I would like to go to the South in the winter time to see what its like. Would I really hear racial slurs out in public?

66. Yeah that is what I was getting at
I lived most of my life in Louisiana where this sort of thinking is common. But even down there they know better than to say it in public much less on camera. If it wasn't staged outright (which I really don't think happened) then I think they are playing it up for the cameras, which in a way is even stupider than what they are saying.

83. At least one guy was IMHO definitely "giving her what she wanted"

The guy that said he didn't think women should vote seemed to be smiling about the whole interview.

You don't know what she told the people before filming them, nor in all instances what they were specifically responding to.

I liked the part where one black guy was saying to his friend, "She had to come all the way down to Mississippi to find racists, because nobody in New York or Chicago ever says 'nigger'". His commentary seemed to suggest that it was perfectly obvious what she was looking to find, and I think at least one or two of her subjects gave it to her deliberately.

Also, she notes at the beginning that the people in the film, while real, are not broadly representative of McCain supporters.

They do represent a real chunk of the population, and they are worth trying to understand to some extent. Two of them in particular were able to reasonably state that they believed that since Barack Obama had not lived in rural America, they were afraid that he could not understand "people like us", and by that they didn't mean "idiots".

Another thing worth noting was the reaction to some of the Palin criticism. Some people identified strongly with Palin's outdoorsy, hunting, and not tremendously educated image. To criticize Palin for those characteristics of her image was viewed by those people as attacking Palin for "being like me". The point that we do not choose leaders at random from among the populace is lost on the woman who says, "What's wrong with riding snowmobiles? I've been riding snowmobiles since I was twelve?"

She has a point to the extent there is nothing wrong with "riding snowmobiles". But it was the strain of urban elitism in that kind of criticism of Palin as a "hick", which in part galvanized Palin's support among, well, you know.

The guy at the NASCAR race who started crying... I'd like to hear what folks thought was really making him cry.

Saying you don't believe in something is another way of saying it isn't legitimate. That's all.

They're ignorant, but was that really so hard?

75. One way is to look at sexuality as a continuum
It's not black and white, homosexual or heterosexual. People fall somewhere on a line from one side to the other.

Others separate the act from the person--they believe that homosexual acts are happening, but they don't label a person by the type of acts they engage in.
