The Monkey Editorial Toon is a Distraction and as Usual, we are falling for it.
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 03:47 PM by FrenchieCat
The real news is Obama's just proposed mortgage foreclosure program.....and there should be many more threads about it than about some racist ignorant asshole's cartoon.

I wrote my letter to the New York Post, and was done with that.

We need to discuss Obama's 75 Billion dollar foreclosure plan.....
that is where the Buzz is needed, not all of the excitement about some Monkey Cartoon beyond simply being disgusted with it.

As a Black American, I understand the outrage, as I feel it myself.....but I believe that focusing on it keeps our eyes off the real prize as to what should be the news.

Economy
Obama Sets $75 Billion Plan To Stem Foreclosures

President Obama on Wednesday unveiled an aggressive plan that aims to help up to 9 million homeowners avoid foreclosure, a major cause of the nation's financial crisis.

The president announced details of the plan in a speech in suburban Phoenix, where massive foreclosures drove down the median price of an existing home to $136,000 last month — a 49 percent drop from 2006, according to The Arizona Republic.

The plan is designed to help homeowners whose mortgages exceed the value of their home and those who are on the verge of foreclosure. It includes $75 billion to cut the home payments of some homeowners and $200 billion from the Treasury Department to purchase preferred stock in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — double what was originally pledged.

"Through this plan, we will help between 7 and 9 million families restructure or refinance their mortgages so they can avoid foreclosure," Obama said in remarks to a crowd at a Mesa, Ariz., high school. "And we are not just helping homeowners at risk of falling over the edge; we are preventing their neighbors from being pulled over that edge too — as defaults and foreclosures contribute to sinking home values, failing local businesses, and lost jobs."

The announcement came shortly after the Commerce Department released even more bad news about the housing market. The government report showed that housing starts fell nearly 17 percent in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 466,000 units, a record low. Applications for building permits, an indicator of future activity, also dropped.

The president's initiative calls for allowing 4 million to 5 million ineligible homeowners with mortgages through Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac to refinance their home loans at lower rates. To accomplish this, Obama said he would remove restrictions that prevent Fannie and Freddie from refinancing mortgages valued at more than 80 percent of a home's worth.

Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan stressed that homeowners don't need to be delinquent in payments to get help.

4. Obviously not.
Seems that the focus in this forum is quite pronounced at being about one story.......

Bet the 1600 Penn Show will deal with the Monkey Editorial as the "Progressive blogosphere" main topic of the day.

I don't believe this is what the President had in mind when he spoke today in Arizona!

12. As a Black American, I guess I don't see focusing on something
aimed at getting us to debate whether Obama is being depicted as a Monkey or not as useful to the plight of this country.

Like I said, I wrote my letter to the NY Post which may or may not make a difference...and for me, that's about all of the "action" required for me on this at this time.

Want to read it?

The cartoon depicting the "Stimulus Bill" writer as a Chimp gunned down by the police is appalling. Considering that Pres. Obama, our first African-American President has said himself that this was his bill makes the historical racial implications that the illustration connotes beyond grotesque, as does the depiction of an assassination. I understand that some will pretend that the toon has nothing to do with our President but they would be badly lying.

In 2009, as a nation, we must do better than finding humor in police action, dead animals, and our dire economic predicament. Whomever had the brain fart to come up with this editorial cartoon should find him or herself standing in a job fair line that snakes around the block while drawing their up their plan on how they will be paying next month's bills. In otherwords, I am totally disgusted.

Respectfully,

XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Let us read yours, oh concerned one!

My outrage is somehow fake? Not good enough? Can't multitask? What else can't I do? Perhaps a phone call wasn't good enough either.

The defensiveness of your post didn't really do a thing in addressing any of the issues at hand.

25. I didn't think my phone call would be enough so I also wrote a letter.

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I hope you will consider the cartoon of Mr. Delonas in the light that many of us who wish the wrongs of our past could be righted. Since that is difficult to do we must tread on certain issues with the dignity our fellow citizens have earned through a lifetime of suffering.

I feel that during this time of national pride a time where our country has taken a step that many other nations have not yet taken and a time where our country is experiencing great difficulties brought on partly by divisiveness. Cartoons such as the one Mr. Delonas drew do not have a place in such a limelight as being in the New York Post.

I respect Mr. Delonas's right to free speech and I respect the right of New York Post to give word to that free speech. But part of free speech the New York Post has is being able to choose what you will and will not print. I feel the choice of printing Mr. Delonas's regretful and disrespectful cartoon was and error in judgment.

Hopefully your paper will find it the right thing to do and print an apology. I will also be writing many of your advertisers with my feelings on this issue.

With all due respect,

And quite honestly I believe my first response did address your issue. We are grown ups and can do many things at once maybe you should give your fellow Du'ers a little more credit.

Only left one comment on the monkey story, it is offensive, but I do agree that it's becoming a distraction and we are losing focus on the issues at hand.

9. I'll bite.
How are we to value these homes? Has the bubble really burst yet? So now a 300k home is worth 200k but the value could decline even more so, unless a true value for the homes can be made, there's no sense in refinancing a damn thing.

It's merely placing a bandaid on an open wound and hoping it will heal itself. As more and more lose their employment or are reduced to part-time status, even the newly refinanced mortgages will be overwhelming.

I need to try and find a copy of the package then fumble my way through it.

14. We are to value these homes as to where they are valued at the time
of the refinancing is done.

My understanding is that the assistance offered is for those whose mortgage is higher than the homes are at current value.....which means that these folks are stuck and would normally be unable to refinance. Meanwhile many of these same folks are looking at large increase in their monthly mortgage payments (based on the type of mortgage that they took out...in where there was a 2 to 5 year window before a payment doubled or something outrageous like that) that they may not be able to afford.

21. I wish there was a way to make it go further than today's current value...
I'm thinking this way because as you skim across the net and various articles and stories, some are saying that today's value is still overpriced and no one seems to know how to determine what the fair value really is until the bubble completely bursts. People could still be refinancing on an over valued piece of real estate.

Sure it helps ease the burden of these huge mortgages now and I'm glad some people will get some relief but we're still only fixing a symptom and not the real problem.

Thanks FrenchieCat.

remotely be interpreted as racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. at all times. The rePIGS use it against us. I even see it on DU here...the desperation to be able to call someone a racist is ASTONISHING.

23. The President is very clever
in addition to being smart. Waiting to try this right after the stim bill passed is brilliant. Now the Republicans are going to have to look like complete assholes if they want to oppose it. They don't want to help the homeowner! How are they going to spin that one?

24. I am with you totally.
Today I want to hear what the details of the homeowner bailout/refinancing plans are. Tomorrow, I want to hear more about it and all the other good solutions that are being offered to fix what has gone wrong with the USA in the past 8 years. I DO NOT want to hear statistics on how many people responded to that (flame bait) idiotic and disgusting cartoon in the NY Post. Your gaze is clear and your focus in sharp, Frenchie. K&R! :kick:

No one should give a damn about anything in the NYPost let alone a cartoon.
