Did NY Post defend this one too? Or did we have a poll on DU to vote whether the cartoon is homophobic?

2. Nope, Al Sharpton didn't give a crap about that one.
Nor about all the lame cartoons that skewered other Democrats.

5. In Sharpton's defense, I don't see how this (tasteless) cartoon suggests violence...
....whereas the chimpanzee cartoon most certainly does.

So, IMO, the chimpanzee cartoon is worse.

Since you're attacking Sharpton for opening his mouth over this racist cartoon.

Not that I agree with your logic.

He's no Rev. Jackson, he loves to rile the masses and cause fake outrage over some issue or another.

34. I agree, but there were holes in her story
big enough to drive a truck through. Sharpton was too intent on continuing his crusade against the cops to stop and analyze the case with a cold head. I'll stop and listen to Rev. Jackson, but Sharpton has become a bit of a joke.

He can't be everywhere at once. And obviously a violent, racist cartoon against the first black president should be confronted head on. :eyes: Al Sharpton has spoken out against discrimination of the LGBT community, BTW.

20. Just as the fact that the current cartoon came the day after a chimp was shot
is pure coincidence having nothing to do with the intent of the comic.

Because you keep omitting the cartoonist's history of bigotry.

23. Depends on what you mean by that.
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 03:45 PM by Occam Bandage
I will agree that the cartoon is monumentally racially insensitive. I will agree that the paper should apologize for it. I will agree that people are entirely justified in reading the chimp as Obama. I will agree that there is a long history of African-Americans being depicted as apes in racist imagery, and that a person would have to be quite bigoted to not be wary of that. I will agree that the cartoonist is a bigot.

I will disagree when you say that the comic is racially malevolent in intent, because unlike the comic in this thread, a bigoted viewpoint is unnecessary for the comic to make sense. The joke in the comic above is that sexually reprehensible behavior has been legalized, so equally sexually reprehensible behavior may as well have been. This is a bigoted and cruel viewpoint, and the comic is nothing but a nonsequitur unless you accept that viewpoint.

The joke in the comic printed today is that the stimulus bill is so bad it may as well have been written by a deranged ape, such as the deranged ape that was shot yesterday. It is certainly possible and hardly unsupported to infer the further joke, "Obama is an ape, as are all black men" from that, but it's an extra step provided by the viewer rather than one contained in the comic. I think it's fully debatable whether that step was intended. Certainly it is not necessary to believe it has been. I personally believe it was not, and that the crime here is one of omission of sensitivity, rather than commission of malevolence.

24. So... it's accidently racist.
The author didn't realize what he was drawing when he drew it.

Is that what you're saying?

And the homophobic stuff?

25. No, the author was fully aware of what he was drawing:
he was drawing a chimpanzee that had been shot, because that was an interesting front-page news story, and if you look through his recent record, he is a fan of jamming references to the stimulus bill into other interesting front-page news stories. He probably did not think there was anything wrong with drawing an ape in a cartoon referencing a bill proposed by Obama because he is most likely bigoted and therefore racially insensitive.

Again, though, I believe racism is a sin of intent, and I strongly doubt that the cartoon has racially malignant intent, mostly because the cartoon does not require it for the joke, unlike the homophobic cartoon you reference.

35. I set myself up for that one.
I will stand by my statement though that to me it seemed to be a swipe at homophobes, rather than a display of same.

There is no date on the cartoon. I'm willing to make a bet that it was drawn very soon after some fundie or another said something to the effect of (I paraphrase) "if we let men marry men, then soon they'll be wanting to marry sheep". I seem to remember something to that effect making its way into the news.

Tell me. Is it "Pron" on purpose, or did you do that by mistake?

Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 03:44 PM by CitizenPatriot
spew his hate, with the usual GOP "cover" of "humor" and "satire". Is this funny? Not to me. Not one bit.

He also apparently has issues with animals and likes to equate people to animals, which I guess is his way of insulting them; but I'm thinking he would be lucky to be on par with an animal. Edited to add: He thinks he's making fun of gay marriage? I think he's made an ass out of himself.

I thought we all learned in grade school the difference between mean humor and fun humor. Other examples of failure to get it:

* New York baker sells ‘Drunken Negro Head’ cookies for Inauguration Day.
* Racist GOP mailing depicts Obama surrounded by KFC, watermelon, and food stamps.
* ‘Obama Waffles’ featuring racist, stereotyped images sold at Values Voter Summit.
* GOP convention button asks, ‘If Obama is president…will we still call it the White House?’
* Website peddles racially-charged ‘Sock Obama’ toy.
