Obama Advisers Sour On Bipartisan Outreach?

Today’s Washington Post has some good detail on the thinking of Obama aides about Judd Gregg’s abrupt withdrawal:

Senior Obama officials portrayed the latest personnel debacle as reflecting badly on Gregg alone, insisting they are still on course to change the tone in Washington and implement the president’s policies. But aides acknowledged that it is now clear that Obama has not been rewarded for reaching across the aisle, and they said he feels no imperative to replace Gregg with another Republican.

Separately, President Obama himself, in an interview with the Slate Journal-Register of Illinois confirmed that Gregg had been the one to initiate talks with the administration about becoming commerce secretary.

“Mr. Gregg approached us with interest and seemed enthusiastic,” Obama said, adding that it was “something of a surprise” that Gregg had withdrawn.

That’s an unusual level of Presidential push-back (such talk might ordinarily be left to aides) that underscores how eager Team Obama is for Gregg to be seen as the one who ignited this bomb. And indeed, Gregg himself said yesterday that the mess was his fault.

1. Bottom line: The GOPers have something on Gregg--they didn't want him
legitimize Obama's economic plans. I agree with Andrew Sullivan--his party went for his throat to keep him from helping Obama.

2. I still think that Gregg was threatened by his own party.
The truth will come out eventually.

No mercy.

4. A pack of feral dogs.
That's what comes to mind when listening to the howling and yowling from republicans in Congress. Said dogs were more than happy to have their ears scratched and their tummies rubbed by the new President, but then they reverted to form and began biting at the extended hand. Their rabid foaming-at-the-mouth rants about the "unfairness" of the the process is hysterical. At least, they're providing good film for use in theater arts classes, the ones that teach how NOT to overact.
