http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=578&e=9&u=/nm/20040915/pl_nm/campaign_bush_dcWASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) courted Hispanic Americans on Wednesday, telling them his policies were boosting home ownership and promoting entrepreneurship for minorities.
But the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) shot back that Bush's handling of the economy has left Hispanics worse off on jobs, education, business ownership and a number of other fronts.
Bush praised what he said was an entrepreneurial spirit among Latinos and said government must set the conditions for small businesses to thrive. "We're doing just that," Bush said at a Hispanic Heritage month event at the White House. The president often cites his tax cuts as an example of policies that he calls pro-small business. But Kerry contends the cuts have sent the budget deficit soaring and are unfairly weighted toward the wealthy.
Bush also touted growth in home ownership among minorities, which he said is up by 1.6 million in the last two years.
