The real shoe that dropped tonight was in the part of the secretary's testimony where she described how the documents were apparently "reproduced" but with elements and/or wording changed... so that whoever did it would basically have deniability.
This is classic Rove. Remember the story about how Bush's TANG records were purged during his first run for governor (and there was a credible witness or two to that)? I conjecture that these documents didn't completely disappear and that the originals were altered typographically and stylistically just enough to allow them to be deemed forgeries upon scrutiny. This was the plan:
Allow the "documents" i.e. forgeries to fall into enemy hands who take them for authentic, let him put them out as factual, reveal them as fakes, and the whole story (and your enemy) gets discredited once and for all. Bad Bush press goes away and you have also discredited the "Liberal Media" AND the icon who represents the liberal media to the right wing, i.e. Dan Rather.
However, Mr. Rather didn't just fall off the turnip truck. He had the secretary describe just how these documents were more than likely partially reproduced, and, most importantly, left the question hanging... "If they are forged, then who did it?" I think we can now say who the most likely suspect is.
